Management Pains

Post by Invisible »

Really just looking for opinions/ideas about how to go about dealing with our unit manager, or how anyone dealt with theirs in a similar situation.

We don't have a rep, which is proving a problem. The line manager is showing favouritism to some staff memebers, overtime is being given to a select few, including a new starter (2 weeks into job) who is the son of the supervisor who is a good mate of the line manager, no one else is even thought about let alone asked. The revision which is due in soon is the same, some are getting ring fenced duties, which aren't changing except for the better for the intended recipients, while everyone else is being shafted. This is not the first time either. When we voiced our concerns we were basically told tough luck, threatened with conduct code/bullying & harrassment complaints. The rep, who is an area rep from elsewhere, who is doing our side of the revision, has defended the boss's position in every way.

Every time we raise an issue it is ignored and/or met with threats. We are fed up, and we've had enough, and need to do something about it, but speaking to him will not do any good. We tried so many times, without even a minor result, we only see it as a pointless excercise. One suggestion was to write a letter of 'no confidence', outlining our problems/issues, which we all sign and send to his boss. Although they are mates so.......

Any help, advice, suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Send a list of instances to Moya and cc as many names as possible, bill, dave, local mps yadda yadda.
And are his threats are no more than vague rumblings about conduct, performance, making you work your hours etc?

Can someone not stand forward and become a rep. Easier said than done I guess as it wouldn't be a job for me.
Tripitaka: "You should live without fear. There's as much chance of good things as bad things."
Sandy: "It's a cheerful philosophy and I've heard it from people before. They're all dead now."
Monkey "Excuse me when I say, that you really are extraordinarily dim!"

Firstly everyone in the unit who is being treated unfairly should raise a grievance which should ... in theory ... get the alarm bells ringing if there are enough of you. Copy the Area Rep and the DSM in all all comms and and maybe draft a group communication to CWU Headquarters and copy in Moya Greene. Ensure that all of the facts are accurate and that everything is documented, ask the area rep if he will attend any formal meetings with the DOM.

As far as overtime is concerned it should be allocated in an open and fair manner using the aggregate system ... if it's not then firstly request that it is and if this fails ... whack in another grievance. Try your best to get a local rep as things 'should' in theory be sorted out a lot quicker with one.

As a very last resort write to your local MP and the local press ... but only is all else fails.

Good Luck !!!
