We once had a 'suprise' health and safety inspection. The DOM was given a 24hr warning that it would be taking place, then made all the line managers ran round all day tidying up and making sure they couldn't be pulled on anything.

A bit of me thinks it defeats the object of the inspection to warn people.

Then another bit, the cynical (realistic) part of me, can't help but think that the DOM was warned because the company do not want to find out about the many H&S infractions that happen daily. It wouldn't look good, and also suspect it would damage their prospects around bonus time.
