not knowing start time

we have a guy in our office who applied for the job 8-2, hes been here a few years and just wants to work those hours, however management on like a days notice will say your working 12-6 to cover collection, surely there is a reasonable amount of notice they must give, or are managers allowed to change your start times willy nilly to suit them? Surely you can put in grievances against this as he only picks on this particular person, and yes they quote "operational needs".

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think they can. Under Pay and Modernisation 2007, there is a flexibility clause but I think it only allows for a 30 minute variation, once a week, and in exceptional circumstances.

My own manager, when I have complained about duty changes, has in the past told me that he can't make changes to my attendance times, but can change the content of my duty at the drop of a hat.

I would speak to the union rep. At the end of the day, if those hours were taken because it suits their life, for example if you have to collect the kids from school, then it is unreasonable for this to be happening repeatedly.

I'm sure someone more informed than myself will respond soon enough.

it's not only that, one day it can be 8-2 next day 12-6 with only a days notice, a few days notice at max. This company is not bloody tescos!! unbelievable.

I think it,s 2 weeks notice, but someone else may be able to confirm or disagree.

ok 8-2 is delivery in morning which he applied for and got accepted for
12-6 is delivery then a break then 2 hour collection

yes but he says that you are contracted to 32 hours not 8-2 even though that was the job applied for.

what is the minimum notice for floater to swap his starts times about? and is their any documentation

The staffing of the office should be discussed at the resourcing meeting with the rep, and the staffing should be displayed 2 weeks in advance.
Unforseen circumstances will obviously mean changes but these should be by mutual agreement.

What if he just turns round and says he can't work those hours because he has made other arrangements?

They try this on all the time. My hours were 10.00-14.42. This was as advertised on the job advert.

I was constantly being asked to come in at 7.30 (which I couldn't do because of family responsibilities). When I would tell my managers that. That's when the huffing and puffing started and the bullying.

I was honest from the outset. At my interview i stated the earliest I could start on any day was 9am.

I also said to the managers one time, if I came in at 7.30 my finish time would be 12.12. What walk could I get done including breaks by then? (We were not allowed out of the office till 10am at the earliest!) His reply was you would have to go over. I replied. I don't want the overtime thank you.
