Fire safety

I worry sometimes about the fire safety procedures at our office. I know some offices have clocking in machines (every other company I've worked for has) but all we have is a signing in sheet. We write a time for the time we arrive in the morning, the time we leave for delivery, the time we get back after delivery, and the time we go home. People who go out, for example, for timed/9 o'clock specials, OMV movements, packet duties who go out several times, collection duties who may go out several times, people who come back to the office to pick up o/t then go back out, etc, do not have anywhere to sign out and back in for these trips. In the afternoon for SA's on overtime, there is no signing in or out at all, apart from signing the van out - its signed back in by the PHG.

So what happens if there is a fire, for example mid afternoon, when the managers will have very little idea of who is in the office and who isn't? Is there a legal obligation to know who is present in the case of fire?

We don't even have a signing in sheet but as I've never heard of anyone being burnt to death in a Delivery Office don't think it's anything to worry about.

The issue rears its head now and then. Management does something about it for two days before everyone just reverts to not bothering. I find people dumping yorks in front of the fire exits more pressing.

I've spoke to a couple of Fireman Sams about this and they say that they ignore signing on sheets because it can give you a false idea of who's in the building so they say a fire marshal should sweep the entire place for bods(if safe to do so) no matter if the sheet says everybody is in the car park.

Wouldn't be me though.

Maybe it's time we had our ID badges linked to those RFID readers above the doors............as long as you can get a printout/download from the door then that seems the most sensible solution.

As for managers still being there it's the poor PHG that has to deal with everything come 12 noon when the manager pisses off home
