70 hour working week

A colleague of mine worked 75 hours a few weeks ago and this week was pulled into the office and threatened with the conduct code if he goes over 70 hours again. Although I rarely bang in overtime like that, two weeks ago I had to (boiler packed up). As you can imagine I am now expecting to be admonished for my crime. My colleague though regularely puts in hours like this and we were talking about where this 70 hour rule comes from?
Can anyone shed any light on this? and is actually legal if you opted out of the working time directive?

As far as I know Euroland have a working limit.... there was talk of an average 48 hrs a week max ... over a year.. unless you opt out.... what the max hours are if you opt out I am not sure....

See your union rep or union head office...for clarifcation of how many hours you can work legally based on your contract of employment or any union agreement you are not awhere of....

Yep over 70 hours. An hour SA before the start of his duty. Works his day off. A collection every afternoon.

Think this 70hr rule is a RM thing. It's to stop people "living" in the office! and to share the OT out! There is also the 11 hr between shift rule as well!

Basically if you can not manage that much work don't stop others the office managers depend on them so the office is clear everyone else in the office probably want yo rush home while he is working till dark managers know what is happening they can not stop it just like the early arrivers in the morning and the runners that want to finish early

European Working Time Directive.

Maximum 48 hour week (Duty plus Overtime) unless you choose to opt-out.
If you opt-out you can work maximum of 70 hours per week although if you go over it must be clawed back the following week to give maximum 140 hours over two week period.
To opt-out you should sign a document once a year.
The whole idea is stop unscrupulous employers taking advantage of employees.
Royal Fail has special opt-out for Xmas pressure.
Should you go over the limits then conduct code is the route, usual penalty is overtime ban for short period.

I understand official RM rules state you should have a 12 hour break between shifts,I know in many Officies this is ignored though

it happens now and again in ours. when they are short, people who are on their rostered week off are asked if they want to work it. so its easy to get a total of 78 hours for the week. 39hrs overtime and you're 39hr paid week. dont see how they can conduct you for it when they've asked you to do it.

You only actually work 39hrs! You've banked 1 day a week for 5 weeks to make up the extra 39hrs.

Think we're talking about a normal working week PLUS O/T on top equalling 70hrs actually worked.

yeah i see your point but in ours its 1 week off in every 4. work 3 weeks on and 1 off. but i see what you mean. so he has actually worked over 30 hrs blue in one week. serious hours that. never heard of that many since it was a good job many moons ago.

The Way Forward introduced the working time directive agreement and capped hours to 70 hours. It was meant to come down but we withdrew from any more phases. The 70 hours has not been policed well over the years but PSP now records and reports any Indivduals who works over 70 hours. I don't agree that you should be threaten with discipline as management have allowed you to do this.
