Engine Fault on Peugeot vans.

Post by Kings Norton »

Hi Guys just want to let you know about these Peugeot vans in my office at the moment. We went on Park and Loop last August and got a fleet of Peugeot vans but everyday since we have had these vans the warning light is coming on saying “Engine Fault” also “ Risk of filter Clogging” a fan then comes on, its as loud as a jumbo jet so when you get out of the van at your destination the fan remains on while you go on doing your walk.
Next thing is you get back to the van the fan has drained the battery so it flat and going nowhere.
We then have to ring the office for a manager to out with jump leads to jump the van.
Managers say the knack is “Lift the bonnet un-clip the battery terminal till the fan goes off then replace the clip on the terminal” and carry out this procedure everytime you start and stop the van.
The vans has been into the maintenance garage and maintenance has told the DOMs tell the posties the minute they see the warning light on tell them rev the van for 10 minutes and that will unclog the filter or take the van up the motorway for 40 minute drive.
Our union rep is doing nothing about this as he is a non driver so that tells you something.

I don’t blame my DOMs their bosses know about it but wont fix the problem. We are told now we will just have to perceiver with the situation. Problem is if a wagon crashed into the van killing two posties and the van was taken away for investigation I can imagine the answer “The postie should never have brought the van out with a fault”
I don’t know where to take this but when I refuse to take the van out I will be classed as a trouble maker but all the other drivers are lifting the bonnet and un clipping the clip from the terminal. Pissing against the wind I would say here! Anybody with any ideas please.

If the DOM wants you to take a van out with a fault like that, ask him to put that in writing (signed), probably with a witness

It's a problem with the diesel particulate burner, they aren't suitable for short stop start journeys that we do, the mechanics are correct though, just take it for a 40 minute drive at a constant speed...........remember to book the OT for it

I don’t blame my DOMs .
Of course , it is the rep's fault.

What do you want the rep to do?,I cannot believe the people at Royal mail who lease these vehicles are that incompetent that they didn't realise the problems stop start journey's would have with diesel engines fitted with particulate filters,it's well known that modern diesel engines are no good for stop start journey's,the halfwit would be sacked in most private firms

I would like the rep to fix the problem internal in a way where he can say to the managers let one guy out on a 40 minute run every morning to see if the problem fixes other than that if told his members NOT to take the vans out on a health and safety issue then there would be big problems in that area regarding mail that day, then I would suspect something would be done, hire vans out till the issue is solved. Why do we pay are fees and they do naff all?

It might not exactly be the rep's fault but it is an IR issue if the members believe their concerns are being ignored by management.
Who else would you suggest they take their grievance to?

I've seen Fiat vans starting to appear at our office as some of our vans have had the same issues

I have posted this before but I think it is relevant to do so again. The AA advice on modern deisels is here http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fu ... lters.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and the main quote is "If you're buying a new car and plan to use it mainly for town-based, stop/start driving it would be wise to avoid a diesel car fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) because of the possible hassle of incomplete 'DPF regeneration'."

Because the mini-bus to take us out has been off the road I have used a van on my walk yesterday and today. In both days I did a total of 6 miles in just over 4 hours, in both cases I must have started it at least 10 times. That is precisely the sort of use that will normally kill a vehicle, but with the DPF issue there is a far bigger problem lurking near by. I was using a '12 registration vehicle, so it is at least 5 months old and has done less than 3000 miles - I dread to think what the furthest distance it has ever covered between stops is.

Maybe the DOM should offer overtime to people to take the vans out once a week and thrash the nuts off them

Some good answers here but managers are basically saying "we can't do anything about it" so who can? and we have no choice to use the vans, but then they defeat the object going around with printed papers of vans where you do a van check every Tuesday, nothing like a piss take that.

with all the stoppages how do you finish your delivery in time ?
Im sure if it meant that deliveries weren`t getting completed and being cut off then management would take a more proactive stance on this.
