Compulsary overtime

Post by zade »

Hi all,

So today i had a liitle run in with my DIM when i told him i would not be completing on time and that i didnt want the overtime either. This led the DIM to get angry and and even suggest that they were prepared to fire me. Now, ive read on here alot about working to your time and cutting off and was prepared to stand my ground, but then the DIM said that I had agreed to having to work overtime to finish my round. The only thing that I have ever signed is my contract and having looked at it just now there is one clause which is making me think that i am not allowed to cut off. The clause in question:

"RM has the responsibility of providing a public service. This puts a special obligation on all employees to play their part in maintaining the kind of service that the public has a right to expect. The nature of the service makes a measure of working overtime necessary. For this reason, it is a condition of your employment that you are liable to work overtime and to attend at varying times on any day (including weekends, Bank and Public Holidays) as the needs of the service demand.

Can anyone advise me on what this means and if the DIM is right?

It means the square root of.....
It means anything you want it to.
What it doesn't mean is that overtime is compulsory.

Thanks for your replies.

It just sort of kicked off at my bay and so had no chance of getting a witness and the few people that were around probably wont get involved. Im going to talk to someone tomorrow.

the DOM did come back later and apologised for getting angry and about what he said, but then went on to produce some printout saying it should only take me this long to prep the walk according to traffic. if id told them what i was thinking right then id probably be sitting here without a job.

disgusting behaviour.

doms know as much about individual walks as i know about being a rocket scientist.

they always pull that old chestnut out of the hat because its a "performance" reason to bully.

make a note of that mate.
and any other time he does it

Sounds like the DOM was using info from the IWT and so the prep times contained within it doesn't provide a true breakdown of the mail to individual walks. The prep time used within IWT is based on your mech tray, so if you get 2% of the total mech traffic then the planners/system assumes you will get the same for manual streams, because nobody measures the % of manual to walks. A simple visual check would be if you get two full mech trays then the IWT would assume that if you put all your manual streams into trays it shouldn't be more then two trays, but what you would find is that on avg the manual clear down is always higher. Therefore the business is fully aware that the IWT can only look at the workload as a whole for your office and not per walk.

That isn't strictly true because we have on several occasions counted the % that each walk gets from the IPS to add to the figures for the mech.
It isn't 100% accurate but it gives a fairly good indication of the total traffic to each walk.
I have counted my mail on at least 6 occasions and the total has always been within 20 of the management figure.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

The indoor element is only part of your workload.
How much you can complete owes far more to the outdoor element than the indoor and as far as i'm aware there is no measure of performance that can be applied to an individual's outdoor abilities.
