What is the purpose of a part time postman?

Couple years down the line and i still dont get it,how many of you who are part time need to claim overtime on a daily basis to ensure everything is complete from prep to delivery?

also who actually takes there break as a part time postman and still completes on time? couple years down the line and this has put a massive strain on me, just wondering who else feels the same?

They save money when they have to pay annual leave and sickness absenteeism. Part timers generally have less rights too.

dont you have any conflict from management regarding cutting off and how regular do you cut off? do you use a car on delivery or be dropped out?

i work 7-1 mon-fri and then 6-12 on a saturday, in that time im suppose to also have 30 min meal relief. which by the time im prepped and outta the office which is most often 9.30/10.00 by the time my first letter is in the door obv leaving me tight everyday with completing by 1.00 and virtually impossible to take my 30 min break.

With respect its not "virtually impossible" to take your break, okay I agree it may be virtually impossible to complete the delivery if you take your beak, but in the end the decision on whether to have your break or not is down to you.

In my opinion, your choice should not be whether to take your break or not (as you get paid for taking it you should perhaps avail yourself of the opportunity) but whether or not you want the overtime. By not taking your break you are effectively cheating yourself of 30 minutes pay. If you can't complete and take your break then advise the manager, if he agrees to the overtime you won't be giving RM 2.5 hours free labour every week. Yes I know it will be difficult confronting the manager, it was when I first had to do it, but it does get easier eventually, and if more colleagues did so, then perhaps the culture will change.

You never know he may accept you taking your break at the end of the shift if its easier all round, but its not something I would either endorse or recomend, but at least in your case it won't be free labour.

thats without the fact we also have to go on the IPS once full timers are called back on after the first clear down intill its then complete,without your walk being touched in the process,which makes it impossible to come in at 7.00 as your basically being asked to get fully up to date with a 6th of door 2 doors prepped also in 30 mins.They also had us on the IPS over the 2 weeks of xmas pressure aswell.

problems for me have happened to many times in regards to overtime not showing up in pay or telling managers and not even been taken on board,ive also been called into the office and had a go at in regards to cutting off.

Cut off then. If there isn't enough time to do the job including your entitled meal relief, then assistance will need to be given to you. Be that either indoor, or by leaving some in the office, at the discretion of the manager. If he insits you take it all, get your union rep and again approach the manager and ask him what he would like done with any mail undelivered when you run out of time!

ive been part time (25 hours) for 3years now. its a pain trying to do anything wiht your life with rolling contracts (mortgages etc). anyway, i just do what im told, overtime EVERY morning, so i basically do a regular postmans hours. d2ds, 20% every day, 40min meal relief etc etc, its their rules. if they dont like me cutting off etc i just explain im doing it how they taught me the job? cant in trouble for doing the job properly. Well i havent.

but if you drive your invaluable anyway, if i really wanted to be a prick i could say im just doing my basic hours coming in at 9 and they would be stuffed as chronically understaffed in my office.

Yes I have questions asked, but I do THEIR job by THEIR rules using THEIR training sticking to THEIR timings.

I dont get involved in arguments or discussions about it, I just state the facts. I have a reputation with the managers of NOT taking the piss and NOT lying and NOT moaning needlessly, so when I cut off it's because the walk is tooooo long.

Ps we are on p&L so no cars on delivery and from what I gather the whole office sticks to it

Ps as to how often i cut off..... it depends on the walk, there are two walks i do every so often and it gets cut off by at least 1 loop every single day including Mons and Tues.

There is always time for our paid meal relief, if it was not a paid break like in many other jobs, then I could see why some would take less break than others.

Some in our office are keen for significant daily o/t, so they want the extra money, but then do not use or claim the extra 10mins m/r at 5/7/9//11/13 hours above the standard 20mins. I keep telling them if they do not want that legitimate extra pay, claim for it and give me the cash after tax... I would be raking in a lot more than my basic pay at our office if this happened!
