Bit of a read but please help if you can.

Basically this morning all the partimers in my office were called into a 'meeting' with the DOM. He's told us that from now on he doesnt want full timers to prep any of our mail for us before we come in. Full timers will be coming in as usual at 6am and us partime staff will still be coming at 7.30am as per usual. So in effect we'll be playing 'catch up' then because none of our prep will be done and we'll still have to do everything we've always done..d2d's etc.

I havnt been there long but one collegue pointed out to the DOM that he cannot do this as its part of the national/local agreement thats in place that partimers walks get prepped/sequenced thrown in. Is he right?

My issue with this is that im only on a 24hour contract, Im on a 'full time' round, I go over my hours everyday (i do book whatever i go over but thats not the point) and now without the round getting prepped its going to be even harder to try and complete!

Any help/advice on what action to take? We hardly ever see our union rep in the office because of the shift patern hes now on..

Yes the Dim/Dom/Lino can do this.

But if you are not prepped in time looks like there will be less time to deliver the mail you have prepped. Easy really.

Work over and claim OT or work to your time and cut off. He/She will soon have a change of heart. If you all do the extra prep and go over your time you are doing his job for him.

Not that I am aware of, either way, you work 'As Directed' and can not refuse a reasonable request. Between your contracted hours only though mind.

As said before, come in on time, do your prep, have your break and then tell your DOM/DIM/LINO how much mail you'll be leaving because you are not going to go over your finishing time.

As also said before DON'T tell him what you're leaving ASK him what he wants you to leave in - the decision is his, too much and you bring it back, too little and you get done early in either case it's HIS decision - the alternative is that YOU become responsible for the shortfall. When he has told you what to leave in you then advise him as to what your opinion is he either then sticks to his original decision OR takes your advice - which will be based on experience and not what his manpower shortfall is.

Just means you spend more time standing behind your frame than out in the cold and wet walking.

You work your hours. How your manager wants to manage those hours is up to him.

Unless of course you want overtime as many part timers do.

Do not cut corners to make things look better by doing more than you should within your time or claiming less overtime than the walk needs.

Prep your mail/pkts/D2D; kill off your "deads"; take your indoor 20min paid meal relief. Decide if you want to complete with overtime, do a limited amount of o/t, or finish at your contract finish time and tell your lino.

Filter mail for the next address while standing still outside the last letterbox; push your High Capacity Trolley everywhere (do not lock it up and carry mail by pouch, it breaks security rules, mail can only be left in HCT for 2/5/10mins unattended depending on the risk assessment of your area); give each attendence call 1min to answer; do not doorstep packets; use your bag drops if needed; have a loo stop if required; take your outdoor 20min meal relief.

Travel back to depot, sort out all failed items, fill in overtime sheet. Don't forget to account for any extra paid meal relief you are entitled to for doing extra hours that you have not used (everyone gets 20mins, there are extra 10mins given for reaching 5/7/9/11/13 hours).

What if the dim gets his/her lackys to come in early and throw your mail in,as a full timer even after pouching up and having your 40 mins break you could still be looking at the best part of a six hour delivery with lapsing ect,surely there must be some health and safety,fatigue issues if the dim can decide what you do inside your contracted hours,it would only be a matter of time before before you racked up the stage warnings through illness,then sacked

That is exactly how you should do it but don't be surprised if you receive accusations of wilful delay/non-culpable inefficiency. You will be told that (insert name of billy whizz corner-cutting O.P.G. here) can complete within the time so why can't you? It takes a brave man to stand up to these bullying w******. Try it if you want but you have been warned.

In order to do a 6hr delivery on a basic 7h 48 day you would have to commence delivery at 8.33.
Allow 15 minutes for conveyance, you would have to leave at 8.18.
Taking off your break and bagging up, your second wave would have to be in the office at about 6.50.
Is there any office where that happens?

Yes my office, we are on a 7am start,first wave and most of the packets come at 6am,no shortage of lackys to help throw the walksort in and sort the packets, 6.50am second wave comes in,the muppets are on it straight away all done usually by 7.10am,throw it in,tie it up,bag it up by 8.am,take 20 mins break,missorts usually arrive 8.15am,dom shouts out its all in,go when you are ready

Some good replies. However, there is something not totally clear - you are on 24 hours but surely, there will be other part-timers on 30 or 32 hours...

Anyone on 30 hrs or 32 hrs (post revision?) is expected to throw out their own mail. In essence the full-timers have 1.30hrs on you to work on the IPS/Packets. I don't think that is much different from other offices.

In our office, for example on Wed: 39-hr staff start at 6.40am and 32 hours start at 8.04am and 27 hours probably about 9.15am??.

The difference in hours is roughly about 1.30 just like yours...

part-timers tend to play catch-up because time spent on IPS/Packets vary and a lot of the old-timers still get to work earlier than necessary. Of course, part-timers follow suit in other to catch up and/or for other reasons
