Differences in pay

I was shocked to hear the other day, from a mail center lorry driver that he is on a £400 a week basic !

While we at the sharp end get just over £300, according to him he has "Tacho responsibilities" to account for the extra £100, so pushing a credit card into tacho is worth £100, blimey the union did them a turn.

What about the responsibility of delivering specials, tracked and recorded items, and making sure they are delivered in weathers.

It seems to me that some are more equal then others in this company, perhaps it's time that those of us pounding the streets had a Union that has us at the top of the list, not others.

Supply and demand - there are many more people that can walk into a basic postman's job and start doing it, than can hop into a Heavy Goods Vehicle and drive it.

Cost - most LGV drivers in Royal Mail probably had to pay for their own training which is a lot more expensive than £15 an hour for a car licence.

Hours - We are not restricted on how many hours we can do as long as you sign the Opt out. Tacho Drivers have strict driving and working hours and cannot exceed them, if they do they are breaking the law and in the worst case could lose their licence and therefore their employment.


However, if you want everyone to be paid the same you have to be careful. Front line Delivery Postman working for Angard get a lot less than we do, and do do MDeC workers. The argument, in my opinion, is not that people are paid too much for what they do and should get the same as us, but that our work is not recognised fairly by the wage we receive and it should be increased to reflect that.

HGV drivers are allowed 90hrs per rolling two week period, which equates to a 45hr week maximum, this has to be done with a minimum 11 hr break between driving periods.

I would have to work a lot more that 5 hrs OT, to even reach the basic they get. Tacho's now are literally a credit card, you are no longer responsible for logging your hours on paper, that went years ago.

If you want to equate the responsibilities of driving a lorry up to 44 tonnes with the responsibility of posting a letter that's up to you but it seems a bit of a bogus argument to me.
Go for it,get your HGV license,get yourself a job driving and then comment,personally speaking they're welcome to it.
I've driven 7.5 tonne lorries,it's stressful,incredibly boring and a general pain in the arse,give me delivery work any day...even for less money.

The difference is not £100. It is more like £30. A F/T postie on 39 hour week gets £372.10 and on top of that £20+ Delivery Supplement, so in fact the difference is virtually zilch, unless you are talking nett take home figures.

They don't get a delivery supplement because they don't work in the delivery function.

They will get their own supplement which is about 1/2 what deliveries get.

Regional Distribution Centres

A new (non pensionable) supplement to basic pay to all OPGs in Regional Distribution
Centres (pro rata for part time employees). The supplement will increase in value as agreed
in basic pay rises. It will be paid 52 weeks a year at the rate of £11.00 per week and
applies to new entrants. It consolidates the equivalent value of current productivity
payments.

or if counted as an MC worker then even less

A new (non pensionable) supplement to basic pay to all OPGs/OSGs in Mail Centres,
OPGs/OSGs in Collection Hubs (who are not eligible to receive the Delivery Pay supplement)

and we do not get paid extra for Sunday working
and we have to work (depending on duty pick seniority) generally Tuesday to Saturday - NO 1 in 4 for us
No 6-2 or 7-3 for us. Most (but not all) of our duties are mainly starting any time between late morning through to Night shift

Yes please take your HGV test and join the good pay we receive

To be fair,the Christmas payment aint worth talking about...But it does go up next year..thanks to the loss of , dare I say it ...colleage shares
