30 Hour Contract

I have been working for RM now for two weeks and am meant to be doing a 30 hour contract 10-3 with a day off excluding Sunday (dont know how that works). My first week was ok nothing spectacular however my line manager told me to get in a bit earlier (8-8.30) so I could be shown what to do because starting the following the walk would be mine. Now I only had four days training which felt ok however not enough to do a walk by myself but me being me I went out. First day i got in at 9.25 and the DOM on the day was surprised to see me (he actually had a causal come in to do the walk) he then said nobody had informed me of your arrival. I finished at 17:05 that day and for the rest of the week my hours where (9.05-16.30,9.05-17.42, 8.30-18:00 & 8.15-16:30) this equates to 43.17 hours my question is is there anything i can do to get paid for the extra hours? also i have no idea who my union rep is as he's made no attempt to come see me mind you i doubt anyone in my office is part of the union...

Maybe that's part of the problem no one being in the union or no rep, I would suggest you go online and join at http://WWW.CWU.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, then contact your area CWU rep. You should not be working for free, if you need to go over your time this should be agreed with your manager, if he says no overtime then you will be finishing on your time and they will have to assist you to make sure this happens. simples. I began on a 30 hr contract and was over my time when I began, so you are not alone on your journey. The best thing you have done is joining this forum, the community here has helped me so much to survive and the advice has always been good. Do not be tempted to take short cuts, you will be caught out, you will get quicker.

What a mess. I've joined the union just waiting for my application form to be processed, it just seems weird no questions have been asked regarding me coming in early.

Newtimes. understandable but whilst I'm still slow I'll at least like to get paid for it.
