Reps Travel Expenses

Any Reps on here been told they will be unable to claim for Petrol costs? We were recently told locally that unless you can produce a Business Insurance certificate for your vehicle that you will not be receiving any recompense. Guess I won't be travelling far on union business then

If we are arguing that members cannot use their car on delivery because the insurance bond has been removed we can't exactly carry on using ours....without valid insurance.
HMRC are also climbing all over the union at the moment including over travel and subsistence payments and if you're not legally compliant they can't make the payment.
This has been coming for a while.

I don't go anywhere very often anyway. Just a bit miffed that most of us will give our petrol expenses for free like our time when we have to attend stuff out of work hours.

We were told if you didn't have buss insurance you'd only get 30p a mile instead of 40p!
I have it included in my insurance and a couple of other reps paid £15-20 on their insurance to get it.
check with insurance co. you may already have it but not realise, i didn't.

also why does CWU only pay 40p a mile when RM pay 45p a mile??

i know that the mileage allowance you can claim as a self-employed person changed from 40 ppm to 45 ppm ( from 2011-12 tax year i think )

So maybe CWU still using old figure ?

I've just done a daily course for 10 weeks on health an safety and travelled 560 miles only to be told I can't claim my expenses back, I change my insurence when the union said no more cars on delivery only to find out they now want buisness Insurence to claim back any mileage, why wasn't I told this before I started the course!!

Are HMRC just as interested in travel payments from Royal Mail when using your car after being asked to work at another Delivery office ?

Is there a form or letter that states you need business insurance? as i have just trolled thru the HMRC site and it doesn't state anywhere that this is required.
if this is so how do you get business ins for a bicycle because you get 20p a mile for it. And how is your area different rules than ours we are supposed to be one UNION.

The rules have been in for some time and cars used on union business must be comprehensively insured which means that the user will be required to effect a policy covering all risks normally incurred and an endorsement placed on the policy to cover the risks for the use of the car on union business. This is not a massive cost and is normally only a few quid extra.

The CWU rules which have been agreed with the inland revenue is the first 10,000 miles is paid at 40pence per mile and over 10,000 miles is paid at 25 pence per mile. The CWU have not raised it to the 45 pence as yet.

Now in terms of her majesty customs the heat is on but due to cuts themselves they have slowed down. However after branch visits and an examination of branch accounts it is clear that we will have to pay money to them on such things as honorarium and where someone has been paid subitiution instead of central billing.

If your attending a course or meeting instead of going into work, does that place not constitute your place of work for the day and be covered under social, domestic and commuting? If your making multiple calls in the course of a day on behalf of the CWU, I could understand the need for business insurance.

The CWU Is making the role of the rep harder, they have to put enough of their own time in as it is, and now they are expected to either pay more out on car insurance or spend time waiting for buses, trains or taxis, and to top it all the CWU dont even offer parity with RM when it comes to mileage payments. No wonder reps are jacking in.
