Second Week as Delivery/Collections Postie

Hi folks,

So this is my second week in the job and I'm enjoying it, I do a few collections from nearby towns from 2pm-3.45pm then take all the post on a 1.15min journey to a big sorting office, then drive back to the office at head off at 6pm.

Just wondering... I'm on a 20hour week, bringing £142 home per week... I usually set aside £100 for essential bills and rent per week which leaves £42 to go mad with... yeah.. right... more like on petrol and electric!... Is this likely to increase? Are 20 hour weeks standard? I'm skimming the bread line on this wage atm, not that I'm not grateful for it (I dropped a nightshift job on £225 per week for this one) .. I presume it's an office thing and would vary place to place and I'd have to speak to the manager about overtime.

It's early days of course but so far I'm happy enough, just if I could clock in a few more hours it would make all the difference!

As you say it depends on the office but usually if you make it known you're available for delivery work before your collection the hours come looking for you even if it's in a different office.

there are no 39 hour jobs being given by RM anymore :( all are part time at least on the DO side I believe

I am on a 25 hour contract and as of today I take home £218 ( but have my pension and POAL taken out )

your money will go up after 6 months and then again 6 months later but your basic will always be around £160-ish

if you can get some OT then do so, but a lot of DIM's do have their pets who they like to see right before anyone else.

you could offer to work your day off everyweek and you will bring home around £210-ish

It's still possible to get made up to full time, especially before a revision, though usually, you need a good few years part time experience, to get to the necessary seniority. It also depends on how the walks are being structured via said revision.

Not a bad idea actually, I wouldn't mind working my day off, it's only an extra day (4 hours) and if I can get the mornings then all the better. I haven't done a delivery walk as of yet, just the collections from pillar-boxes and post offices followed by the longer drive to the big city. Like I said it's early days and I'll prob be looped into the delivery (morning route) this weekend and then go onto the collection run in the afternoon. I hope so anyway, might just need to downsize some bills that I don't really need, I'm sure I could quarter it somehow! Thanks for the replies, helps me greatly.. Our DOM is decent enough, not one of the nightmare ones... well.. not so far

I seem to be on an emergency tax code too which is probably cutting a little bit off the packet.

get on to the tax man as soon as you can and they'll sort it out and send you a full refund of anything you've overpaid.

I'm doing the same hours, the same job, and also started a couple of weeks ago.

Presumably you returned your p45/p60 when you returned your contract - if so, your tax code will be readjusted shortly and you should receive an automatic tax refund via your pay packet (I had about £80 refunded this week). There shouldn't be any need to contact the tax people.

Once the tax situation has been sorted out you (we) should take home around £173 a week. My gross is £171.74 + £11.09 DS a week.

After 6 months you should receive a pay rise of 50p an hour, and I believe you'll also get another 50p per hour in 12 months time........... but don't quote me on that !

Have a play around with the figures (add your 50p p/h rise etc), and your income tax allowance will also increase to £9205 in April 2013, you should then get a better idea of what your financial situation will be in 6 months time. Once the income tax increase comes into operation in April I suspect your tax will be very little (assuming no overtime).

If you are on an afternoon collection duty,i presume it is Mon-Fri so if you work on a saturday as overtime it wouldn't be on your normal collection,it would more than likely be on a delivery 7 or 8 hours,Which might be of interest to you or not.

Just checked my applications job description and this is what it says. Part time, 25 hours per week ( Earliest start time is 1:00pm - 8:00pm latest finish time , working 5 days across Monday to Saturday with a rotating day off) Doesn't say anything in the "welcome to royal mail" email just my induction date and start date time/time etc.
