P&L Packet time
What do you do in your pairings if the driver has about 5-10 mins extra to go off and do large packets and or special deliveries like in our office, and the driver has no extra attendance calls to make. Does he
a) sit in the van texting his misses
b) dig out the walker and take 10 mins of delivery off him
c) something else????
Interested to get people's thoughts on this one

Normally they thin their other bags out of packets or do parts of their later loops and take it easy in my experience.

Re: P&L Packet time
Having had a bash at this park and loop lark this week, I would say if it just a matter of 5 - 10 minutes I am happy for him to sit there with his feet up.
It means I don't have to wait around in the cold when I finish my loop.
When it comes to the last loop, he has tidied up the back of the van - shut packets to one side, signed fors on the other, all the bags checked and laid neatly in order - meaning no work when we get back to the DO.

Re: P&L Packet time
Drivers should not regularly get extra time to do packets. A lot of the packets can be done using the trolleys and the rest can be done when you pass the streets or something like that. That is what I do. Also time could be spent sorting out bags, moving bags forward and tidying away used bags and returns.
If the partnership is one of a regular driver because the other does not drive, then I can understand a bit of chill time - because one person has more responsibility than the other.
Ideally, the driving should be shared - not just one driving all the time... I work with all sorts, I prefer when the work is shared, driving is shared (even on the same day) and posties helping each other.
RM and CWU needs to bring out a guideline on shared van delivery methods/etiquette.

If the driver has 15-20mins worth of attendance calls instead of the usual 5-10 mins does the walker offer to take some extra delivery?jessicarabbit wrote:b) dig out the walker and take 10 mins of delivery off him
The problem with either party digging the other out is it can lead to resentment and if the net result is finishing early it's not very smart.
If it happens frequently then obviously the driver loops need looking at.

It says you can't share the driving on the same day.
Perhaps you want different guidelines?

Re: P&L Packet time
So where is the full guideline on working as a pair?
I was not just referring to the driving - and you know that. No point being a troll - just stick to the thread of the original poster

Re: P&L Packet time
Transfer of vehicle by a signature in the logbook does not mean only one person can drive - just sign the logbook as many times as required in the comment section... if one wants to follow the guideline (for driving as I have seen in other posts)
Furthermore, the driver cannot be held totally responsible where there are 2 keys provided and used by the 2 postpersons sharing the walks. The so-called walker comes to the van and forgets to lock up - the 2 postpersons will be equally responsible unless one person wants to assume the blame.
Working together in reality means shared responsibility for the security of the van and the mail.

Driver Responsibilitychrisj wrote:Transfer of vehicle by a signature in the logbook does not mean only one person can drive
While using shared vans, drivers must follow instructions (contained in the Overnight Retention of Vehicles policy, located on the 6 phase intranet site) by completing the logbook as described. Under Section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 Royal Mail has a legal obligation to provide, when required, details on the identity of any driver using a vehicle at a particular time. In order to fulfil this obligation, the Vehicle Condition & Mileage Logbook (the logbook) will be used as the primary day-to-day control record.
For the purposes of the Road Traffic Act 1988, the driver whose name is last recorded in the logbook will be considered responsible for the roadworthiness and security of the vehicle until responsibility is transferred to the next driver by signature in the logbook. Only the driver whose name is recorded in the logbook may drive the vehicle until responsibility is transferred. Subsequent drivers must carry out at least a “duty” level (roadworthiness) vehicle check before driving and the vehicle logbook must be completed in line with the example used in the Overnight Retention of Vehicles Policy, located in the 6 phase intranet site).
Drivers must be able to provide a detailed and accurate record of vehicle transfer between themselves and another driver/s via the logbook.
It is a very serious offence to drive a vehicle without the appropriate driving licence and necessary permission. Any breach of this condition will be treated under the Royal Mail Conduct Code.
So every time you switch driver you're going to do a six minute duty level vehicle check and obviously management will be fine with all that non-delivery going on?
Behave yourself Chris.

Re: P&L Packet time
Bloody hell I wouldn't want to work with some of you. You work in pairs and both finish at the same time, so if you can help each other out you both gain.
I do my parcels as I drive between the loops, if there are parcels realtivly close to each other we both get out and do 1 each. If there is only 1 parcel my partner will normaly do it while i spin the van around (most roads are blocked of and one end).

Re: P&L Packet time
Need to look at the bigger picture, will assisting (either way) mean you get back significantly ealier than your scheduled return time? Are you using the LWT mandatory equipment for all loops except where there is good reason not to? Are you taking a proper 20mins outdoor break, or are you adding up the odd minute here and there where you have a bite of a sandwich?

Re: P&L Packet time
Generally with P&L when one person is back earlier it varies with me.
1. If both loops are equal I have no problem with my partner putting his feet up if back earlier than me.
2. If I am back earlier it really depends on:
a) who I am with - some I help, some I dont, some I sit for few mins and then help!
b) wether we are short on time
