Self-cert & sickness

OK, so I hurt my left hand on Monday and can't do my usual job, driving an HGV.
I phoned in on Monday but the lino, after first informing me I can self-certificate the first 7 days, asks 'when will you be coming back to work?'
As I didn't know (not being a qualified doctor), she then tells me to 'phone her Thursday or Friday to give me an update'
Can they insist on me phoning in? And should I get my rep involved?

(Typing one-handed takes bloody ages, I can tell you )

Just phone in and let them know whether you'll be back or not. Simples. Keep them updated keeps them in the loop. Plus you are covering your own ass then too.

You have an obligation to maintain "reasonable" contact in order to continue to receive sick pay.
The level of contact should be agreed between you and the manager.
Personally i think asking for one phone call in a week and giving you the option of either thursday or friday is reasonable.
