DOM tells us any holidays outstanding will be lost!
Hi :)
Our DOM has told all at our DO that if we have any outstanding holidays above 1 week (which we are allowed to carry over) by the end of March then they will be lost/wiped.
Many people have tried to use their holidays but simply have not been able to book them as the DOM more often than not says 'those weeks are full'.
Alot of the problem arises from the fact that we have 8 members of staff who are only on 1 day contract but when they book their time off, our DOM blocks the whole week off, making it impossible for others to take the remaining days of that week. This has been happening through out the last year.
Can our DOM wipe our holidays (above 1 week) if not used?
What if like many we have paid for these extra 2 weeks, surely we've paid for them, so he has no right to wipe them, has he?
Is he allowed to block a whole week off when a 1 day contract postie wants a day off? The DOM states that he does this because altho' they are conracted 1 day, they normally work the week if the work is available. But surely thats not the point.
We are very frustrated in out office, especially as our Union Rep is not much use either :(
I do hope for some advice... Thanks in advance.

As far as i am aware he is breaking employment law, one week if agreed can be carried over, wiping a week out, i don't think soChicken_Lips wrote:Hi :)

Hopefully someone has kept their applications for leave and the refusals - if so then GRIEVANCE.
However, before that stage contact your rep to see what they want to do or are doing already, and go over their head if he has accepted it and approach the ADR.
Ultimately, I suppose you need to know how upset is the office, is this a strike issue or is someone willing to take action themselves, or will they just roll over.

Re: DOM tells us any holidays outstanding will be lost!
Thanks.
We have a couple of people who have 20 days outstanding, they have been asking for various weeks off but always told the same strory, that they are fully booked, you'll have to pick an alternative week. But the weeks aren't available to pick!
Obviously the majority don't have as many outstanding but still they don't wish to loose 3-5 days of their holiday entitlement.
Another point, sometimes we've had people book a week of (so obviously no body else can have that week, if at its limit) but the indervidual in question them comes into work and works the full week on overtime (obviously only when it suits management) but this again is taking up holiday weeks!!!
As for the office on a whole, not sure a walk out will be needed as our DOM would bob his pants if it got to that far. However, i for one am not prepaired to sit back and let him do this to the rest of the office (even tho' it doesn't concern me/my holidays).
I basically want to be armed with the facts of what he can/can't do.
Thanks again.

Sounds like he is testing the water and trying to find out what he can get away with. I highly recommend involving the Area Delivery Rep as soon as possible, that will probably scare him.

Didn't think you could work on your annual leave? Thought this was against employment law?

Not sure if its against employment law, but its certainly against RM/CWU agreements.Biker Mouse wrote:Didn't think you could work on your annual leave? Thought this was against employment law?

You can't work your annual leave because it says you can't in The Way Forward agreement.
It is common practice in some businesses for outstanding leave to be cancelled if you don't take it.
But not in Royal Mail.
Has your manager put his intentions in writing? If not, ask him to do so.
Do as TBT suggests and let your Area Rep sort this out.

If you want the DOM in trouble ; or wish to use as ammunition. Then, noone can work on their hols , unless they give their hols up (and book them later). It is Ghost Overtime and is a definate no no.Chicken_Lips wrote:Thanks.

Re: DOM tells us any holidays outstanding will be lost!
Despite my utter disgust we have plenty of people who work their holidays and get paid for it. Is it really a no no or just something that people shouldnt really do if they had any sense?hampshireman wrote:If you want the DOM in trouble ; or wish to use as ammunition. Way Forward Section 4. ANNUAL LEAVEcelerycelery wrote:Is it really a no no or just something that people shouldnt really do if they had any sense?
Employees may not attend the office whilst on annual or other leave. This means that employees may not attend the office to work overtime or Scheduled Attendance.

Two guys in our office doing just that, this week. Two other lads (reserves) were even made 'spare' so the office could accommodate the holiday workers (who got their usual round). Who's actually going to enforce that rule?fishtank wrote:Way Forward Section 4. The ones that want to work their holidays wont complain and the line managers will not complain. Unlikely the spare lads who were due to be on a delivery will complain as it involves a 'colleague'.
Pointless agreement that, even though I agree with that part of it.
