Hi All!

I just had an interview to be a postie on a 24 hour contract. It went pretty well but I'll have to wait up to a week to find out how I did. I just have a few quick questions really. Obviously I asked how much I'd get paid but the lady interviewing me was pretty evasive.

What's the average pay I can expect? That includes all the extra hours I can fit in if they have any. And are extra hours normally available at most offices?

I can't really afford to do the job if I'm not getting near £16k a year as I have a young family and with the standard hours I'll only be on £10k-ish.

Overtime is difficult to quantify to be honest as it depends on many factors, such as whether your office has been modernised in respect to deliveries, traffic levels, management competency, how they allocate it in your office, whether you are willing to travel to other offices etc.

However, this is a physical job and most find it very tiring for the first 6 weeks or so, so I would recommend only doing overtime (its called Docket in Postie speak) on your own duty - you are bound to go over so if your boss is willing (and you have informed/agreed with them) claim as much as you are willing to do.

Once you have settled in there is usually plenty of overtime and cash in hand in most offices, you'll just have to find out how they allocate it.

I am on 25 hours a week and my take home is £215 a week ( but with Pension and purchase of annual leave taken out )
yours will be less than this for the first 6 months though as you will get a pay rise after this time.

this will go up this week though ( by about £3ish due to the 39 hour week being brought in )

and as TBT says, the first 6 weeks are very tiring and the first two weeks you will feel very sore when you wake up, but your body will very quickly get accustomed to it.

I hope that your interview went well and that you get the job :)

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll have to try and ask they guys down there how much they're earning before I can agree to go for it. It's a shame as I'd love to do the job and just can commit till I know.

In my first month I averaged £290 a week after tax just doing my own round and once I got quicker I started doing bits of other peoples rounds who couldn't finish and was earning £330. If you have a young family the job is perfect!!! Look at your outgoings and trim them down, you don't want to miss this chance :Very Happy

If you want to do overtime stick to Monday and Tuesday as it is easier days of week to do overtime.

Yep goes on quite a bit here. I think technically its allowed under the Pay and Mod agreement as long as the proper paperwork is completed.
