How do you deal with your floaters mistakes?

Post by DaveF14 »

Been a postie for around 11 years now and just moved duties to a rural round. We had a mail centre guy with 16 years service transfer to our office a few months back because he wanted to try delivery and our office was closer to his home. He has been trained up on 3 rounds and covers my day off most weeks.

My first day back after a day off, once I have completed delivery I come across a minimum of 3 mistakes each time. Either a letter hanging out the letterbox, a letter put back in the system or the customer comes out and sees me. The customer would normally write on the letter as well saying it has been mis delivered and opened in error.

Now what annoys the hell out of me is that the customer would not know it was my day off and they presume it was me that mis delivered. If I see them its me that has to apologise and say it was my day off and will sort it out. If they dont see me they still must think it was me and that I dont know what im doing.

Few weeks back my first day back after a week of holidays, this customer came out with a letter that he had opened by mistake. He thought it was me that had delivered it and said that the letter contained train tickets and the date on them was for the Saturday just gone. This letter was for another duty and they would of eventually received them on the Tuesday, too late and opened. On the Monday after delivery I gave this letter to my floater to deal with because it was his mistake and it was up to him to deal with.

Now we all make mistakes, no one is perfect. But its how many you make and how often you make them that counts. Every week I have to deal with these mistakes and its so annoying. Our manager is so not approachable in these circumstances, mainly because we dont have much time for each other. (lets just say im not one of the managers suck ups).

So basically

Whats you floater like for making mistakes?

Why do you even care? Everybody makes mistakes, you make mistakes so why do you think it's fair to constantly single one person out ?

I care because I take pride in my job and like to give the customer a good reliable service. You might not. We all make mistakes but I very rarely mis deliver. Why should I deal with other peoples mistakes?

But you still do it, so should people be ripping into you for every mistake you make, you need to remember that it's just a job, just concentrate on your job and don't worry about anything or anybody else.

My floater does a lot more than 3 letters a day. Sometimes its packets - I just have a laugh with him and re-deliver them we get too much grief from certain corners I am not going to add to it.

So you would laugh it off if you got your bank statement, football or concert tickets or something of real importance through your door with opened in error or mis delivered. not known at this address? Your ok with that? You wouldnt be pissed with your posite if this was happening every week or so?

If you are the customer and this happened to you, you wouldnt be annoyed by this? Come on. Your neighbour opens up your bank statement, at the end of your road the postie puts your football tickets into someone elses door and they are away for a few days? You wouldnt be pissed with your postie if this happened to you?

This is what I am talking about. If this was your mail and expecting something important and you knew it was driving around in the van outside your house for over a week you wouldn't be pissed with that service? How do these people get a job with us in the first place. Blind monkeys can do a better job than some of these muppets!

You're not getting this Dave..
If the customer is pissed they complain...nothing to do with you.
That complaint is either acted on or not by management....nothing to do with you.
If they decide to act on it..it doesn't take long to find out which day it happened....nothing to do with you.
Then it's up to management to decide what to do about the floater...nothing to do with you.
You are not involved in this process at all..because it's ...nothing to do with you.

Sorry Fish not getting you at all. If I get to a door and there is a letter hanging out or the customer runs out to you to complain. Yes you know it wasnt yourself but its the feeling of embarrassment and annoyed that your cover made the mistake before you and you are the one getting the grief, until you explain it wasnt yourself and that you will deal with the letter in question.

I think you need to grow a thicker skin.
If i felt embarrassed for every mistake Royal Mail made i wouldn't show face on the street again.
Explain, give them the number of customer services if need be,avoid getting into any argument and move on.
If you are a duty holder and make very few mistakes your customers will know that.
Don't get involved in slagging off a colleague,it's very petty and can be hazardous to your own employment security.
