Packet Count // Revision
Our revision start date 3rd Dec 2012. 1st meeting cancelled, second meeting 17th Dec ( Planning for indoor change ) we had ten mins with the Dom who said here's the floor plan I don't understand it best of luck and by the way if you have any aspirations write them down and stick them on the board. We all had the same aspiration get out on delivery it's bloody Xmas.Thur 3rd Jan ( my day off ) but a 15min meeting was held with Dom and planner regarding info gathering on packet counts which was and did start on Mon 7th. Day two and what a cock up, I could not believe how many ways there were to record an item. I.E. 3 small pkts becoming 1 large pkt to the same delivery point maybe 1 delivery or 3 deliverys depending on who's recorded it. Tracked items, some are recording each one as a attendance call only, even though it requires a sig.
So to get back to my subject. I would be gratefull for any pointers / views /watchouts/scams etc etc.
We have been given two weeks ( w/c 7th Jan ) to complete this process which I feel is insufficient. plus the fact nobodys got any bloody money to spend.
Again your views please.
Regards.

If the results are too high they'll just use the national standard anyway.

One thing that wont be included in the packet count is knocking at a neighbours house if you get no answer. Thus increasing knocks

Don't waste too much effort on the packet count as it will be ignored or amended to the whims of the planner, look forward to learning how to use the LWT and the joys of the 30 min battery life of the scanner, there are other highlights in store for you but I don't want to ruin the fun for you.

Re: Packet Count // Revision
If you have one youll need a strong rep. One thats prepared to say no to the daily intimidation from both planners and managers. They are in it together and to save, save and save. As soon as you can, get it out your head it wont be a savings revision as thats exactly what it is. Go for as many 1 in 4s as you can as they wont be available ever again. Also see any p/t's who may fancy a 3 day week or even some f/t's who may want to buy down. Planners & managers hate the p/t 3 day week as it increases the headcount but sod them. Get the rep to challenge everything they say and seek advice on everything.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

3mins has been bandied (spelling,i did google it tho) about previously...newtimes wrote:is there "ATTENDACE CALL TIMES" for parcels and deliveries for van duties, (not P&L), please.
Obviously depends on a s**t load of factors as to whether that is too much or too little for some.I attended the new Stimulation at Gatwick last week, where it was done by an outside consultancy, who have been paid vast amount of money to transform delivery offices.
In attendance was RM best DOM in transforming offices that are struggling to change, he actually believes that we need to be tortoises and not hares. I thought he was a CWU rep how he reacted to our questions.
I have a folder with RM planning values for delivering packets, h&l, s/d, recordeds & tracked..........remember your heavy & large & special deliveries need to be locked in the back of a van at all times, not left in LWT or HCT unattended.
3 minutes given for H&L & S/D per item.

Thank you POSTMAN, been doing some van deliveries, some of the van drivers are so quick.
The last manager started to use their times to base the rate call.

Re: Packet Count // Revision
Managed to catch hold of a planner, asked why we were not recording tracked items as (a) attendance call (b) attendance call recorded (c)attendance call p735 issued. Answer don't worry just recored them as tracked it will average out !!!
I also asked if our Aplus was up to date he said yes, I know that' s incorrect. Our Aplus chap ( 2 hrs training some 18 months ago ) When I asked if the road speeds for farm tracks, Railway crossings ( we have to phone for permission to cross ) plus business parks with restricted speeds had been accounted for I just got a glazed look.
Can anyone out there provide me with some Aplus pointers.

Re: Packet Count // Revision
Counting packets is a complete waste of time. Our office done the same thing and arrived at a figure of 15 packets a day. Each duty is now getting at least 15 tracked a day before anything else and the amount of signature required packets has probably trebled taking up more time!!

Re: Packet Count // Revision
Task 31a is the packet count spread sheet and has a default setting of 57sec per item, although this sheet isn't agreed with the CWU and the standard value of 57sec doesn't tally with the planning values in georoute. I think of the top of my head 86 secs is given for an unsuccesful barcorded item (spl, rec, etc) but when units are doing the packet count the planners don't explain that we need to capture what items are unsuccessful and returned to office. If you have this info then you can simple use the PV in pegasus planning parameters and workout your office average based on the actuals. The planners approach is to simply total what items the staff record and then deduct this from the recorded traffic for the week:
1000 (packets, spl, tracked, etc) recorded by the mail centre
500 (items counted by the staff)
1000-500 = 50% attendance call and this percentage would be used by the planners in geotool. I have noticed in one office that did the count last October has a attendance percentage of 43% so on there model week of 22,000+ plus packets, spl, etc the planner will try to only plan to handle 9,000+ due to the 43%.
Knocking at neighbour isn't planned also.
Walk hazards (dogs, paths, poor lighting, etc) have no PV within the tools so your safety reps would need to identify the safe system and extra time to deal with each hazard. Although the planners are unable to understand this, safety considerations is actual mentioned within the joint statement on spans.
