Blimey. Firstly this is all wrong as your supposed to have training and I am surprised you have not walked out.

With ref to question 2. If your not going to be able to complete your allotted amount of mail you must tell a manager as soon as possible. This is tough if you have just started as you cannot be expected to estimate the time needed. If you are able to work over your time (getting paid overtime) then see a manager before you go out and ask if this is ok ? If you cannot go over see a manager and inform them that you will only be working up to your paid time and will be returning any work left.

Its vitally important that you inform a manager either way as you could be sacked for wilful delay of mail. Once you have told a manager you are covered.

Stodman, join the union immediately (CWU). Ask someone to point out who is the union rep, and go and have a word with him/her and point out what you have said on here. The manager and union rep should be ensuring through resourcing meetings that you are receiving proper and sufficient training in order for you to do the job properly. You are not paid to come in early. Your manager should be the only person who can authorise you to come in early and if you are prepared to do this, make sure that it is on the basis that you are paid for this. If not you will work your contracted hours.

Every office has a training officer who is supposed to train you, ask and find out who it is also like evryones telling you find the cwu rep and let him know whats going on. Whats happening to you is a disgrace

I started at the beginning of January. I will say now, so far so good with me, I am loving it. I don't particularly enjoy sorting my round but hey, all jobs have down sides. Once I get out on the streets it's brilliant. The round I have for my first 8 weeks has 640 houses, the longest, by far in the office.

So what I am about to say comes from somebody with a positive hat on.

Think yourself lucky you missed the induction day, it is pretty much a total waste of time. There is so much wrong with it and very little right. Didn't look at a PDA, the problems you encounter with it, what to do if it breaks down, what alternatives are there. What customers have to sign for, very little on the day to day duties of a postie. The fact Specials have to be delivered by 1 o'clock, didn't know that until TODAY! It really was dire. They need to ask people a month after being in the job what they thought of it, how useful was it and how it could be improved.

I have the longest duty in the office but I expected it, I am the new kid on the block, it comes with the territory.

My 'training' has been so unstructured it's unbelievable. First day out with a bloke on light duties who pointed out number 2 is there, 3 is there, 4 is round the corner etc. The next day a former RSM who showed me a different way to do the walk, which was confusing. Third day I was on my own but I felt great and I learned, what could be said the hard way, no better way in my books.

Since then the people I've been paired with all seem to have different ways of doing things, some never use a trolley, some do, it really is a steep learning curve. We never do the other round I'm paired with the same way but the job gets done and we get back to the office.

Your early days appear very similar to mine. Take the bull by the horns and ask your co-workers, find out who the helpful and upbeat ones are and target them! More importantly find out who the doom and gloom merchants are, every office have them and avoid them like the proverbial plague because they WILL drag you down to their level and demotivate you.

Stay positive, accept training is not one of RM's strong points and have a laugh.

signing more agreements with the o/c.
i think this shows that its time to open up training schools again,this should be a joint adventure by royal mail
and the union to show how the job works from delivery/processing/distribution.do a two week scheme explain
pensions,wages,h/s issues,and a basic sorting test.once singed up a full uniform.
lets get back to making staff a bit more wiser in what there walking into when at royal mail.
and stop this payment every week to staff or union reps who are taking the piss in not trainning new starters.

so do we just shut our eyes and keep our mouths shut and turn the other way.
the union and mangement think staff will just keep excepting this crap that is happening every day
how many members have to leave this union before someone wakes up, as for royal mail they treat
there own managers like s**t do you think they respect there staff.

fng - all is well and good you picking holes in what im saying, but what i was actually saying there is i have been taught nothing - bundling post and putting it through a letterbox is something a 5 year old could do, its common sense, and i wouldnt consider being shown how to do this as "training".

Anyway to all the others, thanks alot for your advice i asked around today who my union rep is and am going to speak with him tomorrow and hopefully sort some stuff out!
