Day in lieu paid instead of added on.

Hi there
It's that time of the year again for me where I get shafted with a day in lieu, my day in lieu is new years day this year. I was talking to another postie who said I may be able to get the hours for the day in lieu paid to me instead of being added to my holidays which I have been told can only be booked in week blocks. I'd rather get paid for this day as I will never get the chance to take this day off. Getting time off for a funeral is bad enough so no chance of me taking one day off, only asking to move my day off to when I want it off. Thought I would have the money instead, getting sick of being shafted with Monday-Tues days off with my 25hr contract is this possible?

Cheers Spen, I wasn't given the choice, then again I don't suppose they'd like to advertise the fact you can get paid for the day in lieu. Hope it isn't too late to ask for it paid as I wasn't told in the first place.

Yep yet another RM grey area... I did read on here that if they can't give you the day back within 1 week (fat chance!) then you're entitled to the pay instead.

There used to be option A and option B on the docket, relating to working at Easter.
I have never in the last 13 years known of anybody working in delivery get paid for their rest day falling on a Bank Holiday.
It isn't a grey area. It is an urban myth.

Yes It does.Almost everyone in our office, who was affected, chose to be paid for the day instead of a day in lieu.

Print the agreement off,and tell your manager you want paid for the days.Tell your Rep as well.Last year they tried to tell me that they couldn't pay me for a day as It had already been processed as a day in lieu.I got It in the end.

Clash may be right. Our claim for adding the hours instead of DIL was refused on operational grouds.

Well, the Dom said it was "not operationally possible".

So what do you do?

It happend to me too, i asked my manager when my day off was he informed me that it was on 26/12/12 i asked if i would be paid for it , no was the answer i then asked if my day in lieu would be the following week again no was the answer its a joke .To follow on i started working for royal mail in september and have yet to get a saturday off tuesday was my regular day surprise ,surprise the lightest day of the week . I have had one monday its a joke, the union dont make me laugh

How about this one. I got two leiu days owing, one from christmas day and one from new years day. Didn't mind at the time, though wasn't happy about it, thought I would book a couple of days in summer off. So, went to manager and asked if I could book my leiu days off. His response was no I can't as I cannot take them until April 2014??????? WTF a whole 15 months away!! I was under the impression that they were booked in the following annual leave year which would be April 2013-2014, not f***ing April 2014-2015?? And no I wasn't offered payment for the days, would have pushed for it if I knew I had to wait 15 months to take the days. After all the effort I put in xmas, and not getting my days off two weeks in a row, important family time...this is what I get. Treated like s**t. What is the policy here. In what annual leave year should these leiu days be taken 2013-2014 or 2014-2015???
