Getting told off for wearing spikes!!!

Heard today a manager had told a postie who was wearing spikes that "if they slip on the ice today wearing those spikes its your own fault". Its says quite clearly on the packaging "anti slip for snow and ice"

I always thought that chains work best on snow and spikies on ice.

My delivery had both with the pavements packed with 3" of ice and the driveways mostly containing a foot of snow

I took both out with me and used the chains in the end, did not slip thank god.

To be fair chains on ice wouldn't work but not being allowed to use the spikys on ice is just plain retarded.

so RM spend thousands of pounds in providing all posties with spikies and then tell them they can't use them.

FFS, you could'nt make it up!!

I have got both spikies and chains ( although these are like gold dust as RM won't provide them anymore ) and use the chains in both snow and Ice, the spikies are awful in the snow and ice due to the rubber bottom that covers most of the grips on your boots anyway. as long as you walk differently with the chains on ie: whole foot down instead of heel to toe you will be fine in my opinion and findings.

simple thing to do now then is to not go out at all in snow or ice or even threat of either as we will not be covered if we do have an accident.

Spikes are all well and good until you take into account the fact that half your round will have snow/ice whatever on it and half wont, it wont be a neat half either it will be patchy everywhere. You don't want to be walking around a non icy patch making a clinky sound and slipping as they are not made for that surface, and you want them on on the icy patches, so we need to keep taking them on and off, that would be fine, if you didn't need to sit down to put them on and off, and they were easier to get on and off. They aren't practical for this type of work.

Now lets say you do a town round where you go inside shops you aren't meant to wear them in there either, and you need to take them off to drive, great for rurals with lots of stopping and starting or if you are doing parcels.

But the day that we had snow and ice everywhere (near enough) i found they were great and i was very stable.

See if you can order some 'Grip-Lites', this was taken from an LTB back in December 2011 !

I have these Grip Lites for use outside work and they are way better than Royal Mails for traction and grip. However, I don't think they would stand the pounding of day to day work through a prolonged period of snow and ice.

Also Royal Mail would have to keep stock levels high and I doubt they would, especially after Leigton and his "Just in Time" influence from ASDA - which in the real world means months after you need them.

Wore my Spikeys for the third time ever today (third day in a row), and they are splitting at the back by one of the studs! That makes the 6 weeks that the CAT trainers lasted seem really good.

Got my spikeys when I ordered some new trousers in early dec > with side pocket on the correct side < didn't ask for spikeys, just came with trousers.
