DEPUTY leadership frontrunner Alan Johnson yesterday pledged to be the champion of the working classes in Government.

Alan Johnson was a member of the CWU who sold out the Saturday premium, night rate on o/t and s/a from Phg's to pay for increased pay for delivery postperson, the current opg grade has only just crept above for Night allowance that was paid b4 Johnson got his grubby hands on it.POSTMAN wrote:What's the score with him,is he a gooden or a badden,any oldies on here know much about him?

Keggie was Deputy general secretary,the job Dave Ward does now ,and was responsible for the way forward agreement,the wost in the unions history,imho.Alan johnson,was general secretary about 10 years ago and done a fair job,its the job Dave Ward does(D.G.S.P.) THAT IS THE IMPORTANT ONE,as he negotiates pay e.t.c.Since he has been a politican,Alan Johnson has had a few high profile cabinet jobs including the D.T.I. where he BACKED Leightons ideas on the shares issues within Royal Mail which did not go down at all well with the current leadership of the C.W.U.
So to answer your question postman it looks like hes a badden,whos forgotten where he came from.

Johnsons a tosspot he only did union work to get further up the greasy pole, before Dave Ward they were all pally with the management, and we got sold down the river by him and Keggie, we had years of crap pay deals while the goverment took millions out of RM and ignored the pension, i just hope Dave Ward stays militant and doesnt get all warm and fuzzy with management. UNITY IS STRENGTH...

L Tommo, I'm getting the vibe here that you have some issues with Mr Johnson
I must admit, there are some people in our office who came out of the union over the years, seeing some officials who seem to have an agenda that has nothing to do with the core activity of defending the membership. The best example of that is the career path of Mr Johnson, just using the CWU as a ladder for his political ambitions.
(He delivered letters to John Prescott's house when he was a postie. At least that's his version of history. Must have thought "I fancy some of that lifestyle...". If Johnson does become Deputy PM, then feck me, he'll really be a poacher-turned-gamekeeper. I wonder if he still gets the use of Prescott's former secretary ...
It IS important to be in the union. Now, more than ever. But I think everyone should bear in mind that some CWU officials may not always act in a way that is ultimately in our best interests. As the song says 'Don't let 'em fool ya' !!!!!

I remember Alan Johnson very well, I don't agree that he used his union postion to climb the greasy pole. also I don't think either him or John Keggie would count the other as a friend. Alan only "jumped" over to politics when his position in the union became untenable, due to a number of issues taking place behind his back. Don't get me wrong I don't think everything he did was right, and certainly since he went over to politics I have a number of issues with the decsions he has made, but I always believed he thought he was doing the right things for the right reasons, in the long term interests of the members.
