Illness!!

I have been at royal mail for 15 months now and previous to the last 2 days i have had 1 day off in 14 months....

During the bad weather i slipped... (not over) and the bag swung round and i pulled my back... i informed my line manager who said i needed to come in and see how i get on the next day to which i complete under some discomfort...

Due to the pavements still being slippy etc i was given some spikes.. but these did not help the weight of the bag the following day was greater than the day before... and i could not complete and someone had to complete the delivery for me. (maybe the line manager himself)

I have been off for 2 days now (fiday and Sat) and my line manager says if i have tomorrow off i will need to have a management interview and a referral to ATHOS!!!

Can anyone enlighten me to this procedure... i have not been out the house since i arrived home from the dr's on thusday.. who said i have pulled my core muscles on my back and they could benefit from 2/3 weeks rest. Due to the line of work im in on delivery the back muscles are always in use... i was told to regularly take pain killers etc and generally take care of my back.

What does the management interview entail.... and wtf is ATHOS?

To note i have a letter of my Dr stating the above... I even offered to go in and do light duties in the local office but they said they have nothing other than delivery even tho i dissagree but none the less can people explain.

Atos are employed by the RM to assess injuries/illnesses and then try and work out the best way to get you back to work!

My dealings with them, I found them ok but some have had trouble with them. You have to bare in mind ultimately they are paid by the RM and therefore they can be a little pushy when it comes to getting you back to work.

Well i have been told by the docs i should pref rest for 2/3 weeks but i know that wont happen.... although i think i have annual leave from the 28th for a week... so i could self certify for 7 days right? and then use my holiday to rest...

And what is to gain from a management interview

accident on duty. should not count against you within the attendance procedure. get your union rep involved asap.

Atos, also known as the miracle workers, what these people dont know about your medical history after 5 minutes on the telephone isnt worth knowing. On a serious note,KEEP A DIARY, write everything down, including there comments and what the manager tells you to do, it comes in handy if needed

Atos is where sick and injured people go - it's cheaper than Lourdes and you can be cured over the phone.

Plus when you do go back use a trolley so as not to do your back in again.

Pulling/pushing a trolley with a bad back. Nothing more certain to antagonise the injury further.

Get a doctors note for the 2-3 weeks,you will the get your holiday credited back to you.
If your back is bad and you can't go in for an interview,explain this.
Get your rep involved asap.

If you're ill during hol leave and you see doctor, can he give you a sick line which might entitle you to get that week you're off ill back holiday wise? What is the procedure???

Yes.
You contact your manager and ask to be taken off annual leave and put onto sick leave,you don't even need to see a doctor if it's less than 7 days,you can still self-cert.

Yes.
You can't have it both ways,if you move from annual leave to sick absence it becomes part of your sick absence record.
