Job hunting for outside Royal Mail

Share your experience in here, to give us idea to get out of Royal Mail and work out what are in demand. There are so many unemployed and a recession to deal with it.

I would like out, but not looking for a job as I knew how hard to get job before working as postman.

So let say we need to look at 25,000+ (plus pension) and full time for guideline.

even though I am a 25 hour postie the money I take home from this job is more than I would take home from a 40 hour job elsewhere.

driving, stacking shelves, shop work etc etc are all paying less that £7.00 an hour, so no matter how much this job gets me down someday's I have to stick with it if only for the summer months when I could be working in a stuffy warehouse, factory or office rather than outside in the sunshine or sitting at home in the garden in the afternoon's.

there are jobs out there, however the wages are pretty poor and unless you can get some benefits to top it all up you will be struggling to live a proper life so to speak.

There always seems to be jobs in Security, and the moneys not bad, as long as your ok working nights, 50+ hours, and weekends!

Even if you find a very good job outside RM ,you go their in a Months time something happens you could be out the door in seconds
with very little rights and little suppourt .

if you have some service with RM you have to mess up big time to loose your job.

In my area almost like every other area only carers jobs,some some p/t shop work that is it .
A few weeks ago Group 4 security looking for Prisoner Escorts ,poor money,but imagine escorting some of these nutters in Prison.

Some Managers jobs going in different companies,often with reasonable packages,but not disclosed what is required ,in so many companies these days Managers are little more than supervisors and all the important decisions are taken at a remote head office somewhere,sounds Familiar ,but this is the blue print for most PLC'S these days .

Some sales reps ,as above good package ,Targets not disclosed bot proably unacheivable,with high preassure,saw staff in a well known chain of phone shops ,staff have to record their sales by the hour ,thats preassure !
Some Agencey Work ,but very hit and miss.

Some franchises ,driving school and couriers,big money promissed,large upfront cash paymeny by you reality is different to promisses ,How many people do you know have tried Yodell as owner drivers,I Know of 4 who tried it and then gave it up .

Driving school another,know 2 people who did it and gave it up but know another wh is very successfull at it ,as he specialises in teaching people of a certain nationality who may not speak English that good

Now look at Police new recruits salary £19000 p/a for working shifts and putting your self in danger so much Political corecctness
so many rules as to what you can do for £19000 p/a .!

If you know how to work the system the Jam role /Dole is the best job out their only if you can work the system ,how many people do you see daily .not working but enjoying a good lifestlye.

Other than that a RM planner .little preasure ,the more you mess up The better you are thought of ,
risk of strain injury though drinking coffe all day ,playing about on the laptop .good salary and expenses or company car,dont get hands Dirty .

One thing is for sure if full employment ever returns RM will have serious problems as morale is all time low.

The best job out there is claiming disability allowance, My neighbours have never worked in twenty years that I know of.They get a free car and a free house and just had a new extension built at no cost to them.Oh- and they use the car for thier fishing trips.Not much wrong with them that I can see. With all due respect to genuine disabled folk who deserve the benefit. Some in my opinion are not that genuine.

think short term its hard finding reasonably paid work.

but judging by the markets it probably wont take long now for employers to start employing again.
might take a bit for the private sector to overtake the public sector or rather get back to their previous status.

i was earning more 7 years ago beofre i joined royal mail
if i went back in to the same line of work id probably be on the same or just below what i was on.

If I was a younger person and knowing what I know now and what the current employment climate is I would definitely start working for myself. I do this now in my spare time working as a gardener, mainly for elderly people, but also there are people out there that either cant do their gardens or hate gardening and are only too willing to get someone to do it for them. The lowest I get paid is £10 per hour and the highest £12.50 per hour. There are about 3 months of the year when there is no work which is the reason I have not given up the Royal Mail job. But there is plenty of work during the season, I have to turn away work as I am unable to fit it in with the RM job as well. If you do a good job especially for the elderly, referrals to friends etc come regularly and I think someone who wanted to make this a career, could make sufficient money during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months to cover the winter periods. Start by using the customers tools and equipment so you have little overheads, and then when you have built up a good customer base, invest in some decent tools which will speed up your work and allow you to do more jobs.
There must be other jobs that people are desperate to get done but cant afford to pay big ticket money for, such as decorating etc if you have a bit of flair for this. Sadly our jobs with Royal Mail are only going to get more and more stressful and poorer paid and as we have heard, there is nothing in the marketplace that is going to replace it.

If just completed getting a degree ( Accounting) and their is nowt out there. But i expect the market will pick up within the next year. I've decided to do a online course knowing it can only help .....eventually.

Indeed. I think some people have been at Royal Mail for so long that they are blinded to just how bad other jobs can be and wouldn't be able to cope. You work your hours, you go home and forget about the job till the next day. It's taken me a while to appreciate that (and sometimes I still have a moan once I get home!) but you simply won't find such an easy job for the money we are paid.

And I've had some shoddy jobs since leaving school, believe me, so know what I'm talking about.
