1 in 4 sat off

Post by teamtalk »

Simple question really.

I thought this was part of the national agreement.
But by all accounts offices can opt out of this if it suits.

Offices being signed off with 1 in 6 sats off ie rotating day

Should this be happening?

Depends upon the aspirations of the depot workforce, which the rep should have determined by asking all the workforce and put to the managers and planners during the preperation of the revison. Ours did and we have a "mixed bag", most FT get 2 Saturdays in 6 off; 30 hour PT work on a rotating 4-day week (so get a 5-day long weekend every few weeks); 22.5 hour cover the FT days off on Mon/Tues/Sat and get begged to bail out the office by doing extra days Weds-Fri without the benefits of a written contratc that would attract better holiday and sick pay. The odd employee has arranged Mon-Fri hours and/or different working hours to accomodate "family friendly" requests.

Always been a contentious point that.
The agreement reads...
Whilst the precise number of Saturdays off and the aspirations of employees will vary from unit to unit, both parties believe we can deliver cost effective and reliable options that will maximise the number of Saturdays off for those who wish them.

...for those who wish them.
For those offices that wish them or for those individuals that wish them?

Is that agreement only for offices that have had a revision? as none of those practices happen at my office, its mon -sat for everyone except the 3 part timers who only work 3 days a week over 6.
Just say NO ....to the new agreement.

Yes if your office wants it when you go through the revision process.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

So as an individual within a office your not entitled to 1 in 4 Sats off?

If that's the case then that is not the way it was sold to us at the time of the agreement.
People were under the impression that 1 in 4 was the least they would get.
Seems once again the union are fudging.

The question is,why would an office as a whole not go for at least 1 in 4 off?

The attendance pattern is decided by the office.
For whatever reasons, if an office decides to stay on 1 in 6, that is their choice.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Answered this before...

Some offices decided against it under the threat of job losses or an increase in the part-time ratio..
Some followed bad advice from Area/Branch,some Areas promoted their own agenda above the members aspirations....
Some were under the mistaken belief that it automatically meant longer days or different attendance patterns and didn't fancy it...
Some were bullied out of it by management....
Some didn't even get a say....or a vote.....

And i suppose some liked their comfort zone/were afraid of change.
A lot of these offices have probably missed the boat now although if we do end up going to Mon-Fri it won't matter in the end.

Our rep thought it was best to recommend not going down the 1 in 4 route, as it would cost jobs and get this... Part timers would not receive a Saturday off ever. We had am 'excercise' to establish peoples wishes amd people were filling in pretty much how the rep wanted. Some were asking, "is it this box i tick"

We have had no vote as yet, but the duties are going on the wall to presumably an agreed span of 4 hours 15 (according to 1 of the planners in canteen yesterday).

Opportunity for more Saturdays off, and people were being advised that this wasn't the route to go down!!!

Or in our case decided by the rep, management and planners and then sold to us as the only choice, unless you wamted to see your colleague next to you in the dole queue the following week and your part time colleagues never again getting a Saturday off. That little bit at the end, bearing in mind our office is approx a 50/50 split at present means that any vote is a mere formality.

I personally wanted a 4 day week, which I beleive would have meant 1 in 3 Saturdays off, but that wasn't even on the menu and any talk of it quickly downbeaten!

It really does depend on the wishes of the office. You do have to balance the duty pattern to the amount of SA the office wants. If the office does not want the SA then you can have more innovative duty patterns.Nine day fortnights, five day weeks, one in four Saturdays off and so on. Four day weeks are difficult to maintain in delivery offices. Suppose the choice is money or time off. Hope this helps.
