Can I be union rep
Can I become office union rep if I am on three month contracts still, as has been the case for over two years....do I have to be voted in???? We don't have a rep at the moment.

Re: Can I be union rep
If you are a CWU member - you can become a rep. (I think)
No - you don't have to be voted in, if nobody else wants the gig. Talk to your colleagues to see if they would support you as rep and talk to the Area Rep and explain you are interested in taking over the role. They will then tell you how to go about it. And make sure you find out what training is on offer.
Talk to your partner - because it will take up a lot of your time and energy.
Good luck.

If you've been there over 2 years then you should be made up permanent, and good for you, go for it we need more reps

Leave the repping and let one of the 'permanent' canteen cowboys do it.
Keep your head down till you get made up,then you can go hell for leather, you are on a 'shall we shall we not, does the c*** do as he's told'' rolling contract.
For reference and possibly a nudge in the right direction...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Susan - don't be such a wuss.POSTMAN wrote:Leave the repping and let one of the 'permanent' canteen cowboys do it.
A permanent contract doesn't stop you being conducted as a rep.
Being a rep shouldn't mean perpetual conflict.

I never mentioned being conducted,i'm mentioning being laid off, sacked,or in a simpler and easier term because most managers are scum, his 'rolling' contract not being renewed cause he's an arse in the office and the screw can't get his own way.clashcityrocker wrote:Susan - don't be such a wuss.POSTMAN wrote:Leave the repping and let one of the 'permanent' canteen cowboys do it.

Is it worth the gamble.

I know exactly what you were referring to - but being a rep carries certain "dangers" whether you are permanent or not.POSTMAN wrote: I never mentioned being conducted,i'm mentioning being laid off, sacked,or in a simpler and easier term because most managers are scum, his 'rolling' contract not being renewed cause he's an arse in the office and the screw can't get his own way.

Where does your argument end?
If you are on a rolling 3 month contract you should always start early, never take your meal relief, use your car if asked, don't claim all your overtime?
I understand that being on a temporary contract is a precarious position and that they have to suck cock, but they don't have to swallow.

Re: Can I be union rep
Got two years left it seems till they make me perm. Rate it's going there won't be any reps cause everyone will be on short term contracts. Our office ain't got one but needs one. Been six months now. Personally I believe in fairness, stand up for myself but hear other people, especially newbies being pressurised which I think is wrong. Only the other day I went over and booked it, DOM said 'if u finish early this week I won't pay it to you - flexibility agreement'. Full timer finishes books exactly the same time as me, I said to him 'did DOM say this to you' he says nope. Someone needs to make a stand.

Understand your frustration and it's your call and good luck with your decision.
As a side, why not contact the area rep for guidance and also have a word about how long you have been on a rolling contract,he may be able to make some noise about it.

Re: Can I be union rep
Thanks postman. Maybe I'll have a chat with the area guy. Not sure if I will or would go for rep but just hate to see people pushed around and treated unfairly. Our office isn't THAT bad but there is room for improvement, and if there was a rep it would be a lot better. Since our rep stood down things have gone down hill.
