Looks like we might get some snow soon. Have only been with RM since Feb '12 and have not had to cope with snow. I have a bike round with steep roads and drives.

As we are never given any advice or infomation about anything, I wondered what the position was with getting your round done. Are we told to go out and "do what we can"? If so what does that mean. I have been a cyclist for years and have never tried to cycle through snow or on ice. If we are expected to push the bike (where we cannot cycle) then what is considered a reasonable effort to get the bike round and get your round done?

Coming down a snow or ice covered hill (even trying to hold onto to beast) would IMO be suicide.

you just take out what you can safely do, if you feel that you can't do any safely then you don't take any out. However, the following day could be a real heavy day for yourself, you may find that someone else can't do all their walk either but may have a van you could use on parts of your delivery walk.

also if you can't get to your DO but can make it to another that maybe closer, than you can attend there instead if needs be.

There is a process that the DOM and CWU rep should follow but most importantly you yourself must assess the risk. If you think it's too dangerous to approach an address then DON'T, endorse the letters with the reason for non delivery in the usual way and inform your manager on return to the office.

It may be that the DOM suspends delivery, or delays you going out. The same rules apply as for normal days, they are not allowed to claw back hours if they let you go home early. If the offer to let you go early as long as you work back the hours - then that is entirely voluntary and you can take it or stay till the end of your shift. You also do not HAVE to work overtime to complete, unless you want to.

ALSO, for all us trolley dollies , according to the ssow relating to lwt s, then we shouldn't use them in snow.It doesn't say what we should use though...

You're meant to use the old sledge like Scott of the Antarctic used. Pile your whole delivery on and pull it along behind you. Them Saga mags won't deliver themselves, and your customers will starve without access to the Domino Pizza D2D's.

So back to a previous debate, if its on the shoulder, then what is the max weight we can carry ? not that we have to carry the max, is it 5k or 8k ?.

You only need to look out the window (or better still hear your lino's pranged on his way in, or your dom and rep. have burnt- out your clutch while they're out 'assessing the situation') to know you just need to do what you do normally 'til they call 'Enuf!' and then you'll be presented with the options.. .

At my office its normally up to us if we can deliver anything.
I use a Radio Flyer (little red wagon) Google images if you dont know what one is.
Its brilliant in the snow and the post bag fits on it perfectly.
An old lady asked me if it was RM's or mine lol.

Bikes will return eventually and the idiots will realise how good they are why didnt we think of these in the first place oh we did and got rid of em....cost virtually nothing to run instead now van sharing at 1.40 a litre pluse all other costs you couldnt make it up
