39 hour week and money

Post by tovadee »

So the Courier ran an article a few months ago saying all money and hours changed will be paid and implemented by the end of January. So with 3 weeks to go, what are the odds of this happening?!? It's all gone quiet!

The shorter working week will be implemented W/C 28th January in all units.
There was never any promise that the lump sums would be paid up front.

There is a Meeting tomorrow where the SWW agreement is due to be finalised. In terms of the payment of lump sums that is being discussed in the phase 3 talks which started this week.

SWW talks ended today without agreement , Royal Mail want to use IWT and take those offices who have yet to introduce the SWW start 30 mins later on a Monday and 40 mins later on a tuesday.

Big difference from the union postion about banking an hour per week , or having time at the end of your duty.

both sides are reflecting over the weekend and are due to meet again but we are at this stage miles apart.

Even if this was acceptable to the union it wouldn't work in offices that already operate long and shorts on Monday and Tuesday.
I am beginning to wonder if they have any idea what actually goes on in a delivery office.

To be fair Fishtank not all offices have longs and shorts , they did cover where offices already have productive Monday and Tuesday's due to longs and shorts 12 mins could be taken on each day.

To be honest i don't know why the want to make life more complicated for themselves.
Taking bits and pieces from set days is fine if everyone is working a bog standard mon-fri 5 day week but what happens if your day off is monday or tuesday or you're on a 4 day week or a nine day fortnight or you do a hybrid with a collection?
The members would probably prefer it at the end of their shift,RM would probably want a later start instead...it would be disagreement galore.
The words "well thought through" don't exactly spring to mind.

Could not agree more , it would have been easier to bank the hour and plan it in within the revison. The other crazy part is Royal Mail now want to discuss the pace of change on revisons when in reality they are going to end up in dozens of disagreements over where the SWW is introduced in those, offices delaying the actual revison.

We bank hours already in lots of ways.
The 4 day week,the 9 day fortnight,the wallington week...all banking hours schemes.

Banking hours to me is if you finish early one day then that time is , in essence, banked (held) against any overtime that may be worked later in the week. So an hour negates another.

How do the 4 day week etc bank hours?

If you work a 4 day week,a 9 day fortnight or week off scheme some weeks you will work more than your weekly contracted hours and some less.
Rather than pay you 60 hrs one week and 20 hrs the next or in the case of the wallington week nothing during your week off these hours are banked.
That's all that the union are proposing to do here, members will in theory at least still be expected to work 40 hrs, there will be no change to attendance times and instead they will bank 1 hr per week.

Royal Mail's position is that they would rather reduce the working week to 39 hrs but without a revision all you are doing is condensing 40 hrs worth of work into 39 hrs.
I'm not making a judgement on whether these offices actually have 40 hrs worth of work but agreeing to it sends all of the wrong kinds of messages to Royal Mail that it's acceptable to expect members to do the same work in less hours..

Royal Mail have been doing just that WITH the revisions so they have come to expect it to be acceptable.

I completely agree but that's another argument for another day...one that two or three of us on here seem to have been having since the introduction of this..."agreement".
