Permanently taken off signed-for duty?
After a few weeks of me cutting off on a fairly regular basis(round too big, kids to pick up, the usual story), my manager made vague threats yesterday of taking me off my duty permanently, and making me a leave reserve for "operational reasons" if it carried on. I'm well aware that a manager can you ask you to do whatever duty he feels like on any given day, but can he take you off your own duty for good?
Been a leave reserve would be a nightmare, not knowing what duty I'm on week to week or what my day off would be. Any agreements/procedures on this?

Re: Permanently taken off signed-for duty?
Cheers for the replies, twobags was there anything in particular the area rep brought up to say the manager couldn't take you off your duty?
Weekend off now, I'll see what happens next week. Mentioned it to the rep and he didn't seem to really know where we stand when it comes to what duties you can and can't be put on.
The thing with managers seems to be that they think you're cutting off just to be awkward, rather than for any good reason. So in response they try and make life awkward for you just to be spiteful, and will do/say anything they think they can away with. Might be a case of having to put a grievance in.

Re: Permanently taken off signed-for duty?
for a max of 6 weeks ive been informed , if i have to clean the toilet ill do the best job i can as long as they give me the right tools to do it, also please note there are other factors in this that are ongoing ,so whether he can or not , at some point it will be construed as harrasment / bullying.post_bitch wrote:your signed duty is working for royal mailo within your contracted hours..

Re: Permanently taken off signed-for duty?
As Royal Mail and it's managers have devised and executed the methods that have made all duties equal and easy to be done within their allocated times ... it comes as a shock to people who sign for duties in good faith to find that the system is pants !!! If the duty cannot be done in the allocated time then the managers job is to re-evaluate it or assist with completion ... NOT to harass and blame the officer who signed for the duty expecting it to be no more than a demanding but fair allocation of work.
If you do get moved to support duties it will be even more inconvenient for the manager because he will not have the benefit of your route knowledge giving him a fair evaluation of how much he has to cover, as you will not know what to expect each day and will have to phone up or return with unfinished deliveries (which you will of course have indicated and recorded before leaving the office).
Enjoy the experience = your manager won't :)

Re: Permanently taken off signed-for duty?
Cleaning is Romec's work. Nobody can become a cleaner without proper training including Safe Systems of Work. Romec cleaners are trained professionals who have the contract to clean RM sites.post_bitch wrote:your signed duty is working for royal mailo within your contracted hours..

It doesn't make economic sense for RM grades to do the cleaning that is required for the 5S part of World Class Mail (Total Quality Management). It makes sense for all extra cleaning done in connection with WCM to be done by Romec. It would not be cost effective for management to offer this cleaning work to RM volunteers on overtime because each volunteer would have to be properly trained to use the cleaning equipment.
The CWU should not touch WCM, Continuous Improvement or any other version of Total Quality Management with a barge pole. Consultants always do the same thing, they cut costs by 30%. Everyone can see this even if it dressed up as Eastern mysticism (what an insult to Buddhists). Whether this means laying off 30% of the workforce or getting the existing staff to do 30% more work, it is always bad for our members and for future jobs. It is not the path to Enlightenment.
RM won't increase productivity in the long run by forcing or tricking people to work harder. WCM is a short term trick designed to fool a buyer. Any buyer will have to spend a huge amount changing the culture if they want to avoid continuous industrial action.
The only real way to increase productivity is to make the staff happier by improving industrial relations. This can only be achieved by changing and improving the management culture. Managers need to be properly trained and independently monitored to make sure they stick to policies and agreements. In theory, the CWU should be holding managers to account but this is not happening in a lot of units. Full time released reps are line managed by managers who assess their performance of union duties and even when members vote Area reps out, these reps are still not returned to their duties.
