Can i refuse to work with a colleague?

Post by postypie »

There is this particular person who now and again i have to work with....lets just say i don't agree with how this person works and their attitude(and i am not the only one)....in fact i don't think nobody likes working with this particular person, but i am always forced by managers to work with him/her should the needs arise....which is really getting me down...is it worth talking to my local CWU rep about my concerns or should i just grin and bear it?

You should not have to grin and bear it if this persons attitude is really bad then its about time the managers made them toe the line ,the job is hard enough without this problem as well :hmmmm

A hard question, the simple answer is no, you work for RM and they can dictate what you do in their time (within reason) so working with a person you don't get on with would be fine..........best thing is really to try to get on with them, if only for your own sanity :Very Happy

Judgee I'm glad your not in charge you seem to have made a decision just like management would , you would need more facts before come on giving advice like that, it will put people off asking for advice on here , this is the problem with park & loop there are people we are expected to work with who make it impossible to do the job fairly & no one wants to grass up there partner so it's a case of some posties putting up with being bullied with no one to turn to & when they ask for help they get told to stop being childish I am amazed in this day & age it's like going back to the 70s

Absolutely right, and if the manager was worthy of the name he would at least attempt to sort it in an an amicable fashion. Friction like that is bad for both morale and "efficiency" as no-one works well under such conditions.
Being told to "stop being childish" is ludicrous in this (supposedly) more enlightened day and age.

if you feel that this person is upsetting you in the way that they are behaving towards you then you could approach your local rep about your concerns and see if he shares your opinions. If it is a case of harassment then the person doing this needs to be warned first before they are taken formally down the conduct code.If it is a case of bad working practice and it is against what should be happening then again your rep should be able to intervene. If you do not have a rep present then you could approach your manager and voice your concerns first before approaching that individual. If more people have issues with this person than just you then the more you have a justification for sorting it out but hopefully informally rather than to have to resort to a conduct issue

Without knowing any of the details of why "how this person works and their attitude" actually impacts on you it's difficult to offer any genuine or fair advice.
I've had members bitch about other people and ask management to move people because they are "too slow" or because "want to use the trolleys" or simply because they don't like that person.

That's a very dangerous position to take, some people are simply unpopular in a D.O. and although you might have genuine reasons not to want to work with this person others in the office might not be quite so genuine and may just use you to bully this member.

If you are to take the route of refusing to work with someone you will have to be 100% sure it's for the right reasons, those reasons can be justified to management and that there are no underlying personal reasons that would justify their behaviour.

I was forced to work with a guy everyone in the office inc the managers knew I was having a really bad time with his bullying ,all my colleagues all volunteered to work with this sad bully as they knew what I going through. Hauled into office you WILL work with him ,,,,and finger pointed into my face and shouting ,,(he was friends with the pathetic bully). God knows ŵhy I never put in a grievance bout the manager but I've it all written down times etc .

No not a management attitude just a realistic one. No one goes through life getting on well with every person they meet. At the end of the day you are there to work not to make friends. Do your job, go home and forget about it. Flagging someone up to management just because you don't like them is ridiculous. OK if there are more serious reason eg bullying, sexual harassment then fair enough but a clash of personalities?

Tman "Being told to "stop being childish" is ludicrous in this (supposedly) more enlightened day and age." ok so people have the right these days to moan and bitch about working with someone the do not like? What the hell does that have to do with this "enlightened day and age" It's called acting your age. In a world were being PC has gone totally out of control I find your comments ridiculous. This is a grown man we are talking about who should know better, not a 5 year old! :arrrghhh

Without knowing the facts, how can you say it's merely a case of "someone you do not like"? It could be far more serious than that.

Exactly. So he never said it was down to merely not liking him.
