Caring for son. Uncaring DOM

Post by bessie »

I have worked at royal mail as a opg for over 7 years. I am a single parent with a severely disabled child who has severe epilepsy.
I HAVE CARERS WHO COME FOR A NUMBER OF HOURS TO HELP ME GET TO WORK. SOMETIMES I AM UNABLE TO DO MY DUTIES DUE TO SONS HEALTH PROBLEMS
I HAVE TAKEN AROUND 4 OR 5 DAYS [W/OUT PAY WHICH I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH] IN THE WHOLE OF 2012
At the office where I am based they are soon to begin a revision [p&l etc]. I work a 4 day week due to child care issues.
One of the DOMS who has been brought in to help with the revision has told me that she is finding it Difficult to sort me out with a rota.
She even asked me "would it not be better if you left royal mail and became a caer full time"!! Now she has said I may have to go to
other offices and there is no doubt they want me out due to my circumstances Surely this is against the law.. Now they have asked if I will
reduce my hours from 25 to 16 on a Temporary basis. And they keep mentioning can I not do a 5 day week which is impossible for me to do.

Yes this is against the law.
It is disability discrimination by association.
Contact your Branch and see if they have a disability champion or contact Linda Roy at CWU HQ.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Ask your manager for a copy of most up to date parental leave policy April 2012 available from HR or the intranet, as it contains how much time you can take off each year for a child with a disability without any consequences up until they are 18.
You will be surprised by the amount of information both yourself and your managers are unaware off.

Absolutely disgraceful.

How can humans stoop that low when they themselves one day may want help off a relative in a similar position to you.

I'd be taking this further.
They tried to use me being a carer as part of their reasoning against me in my sacking.

Bessie just politely say no to the requests you have had, ie would you drop down your hours from 25 to 16. Also if you are on a 25 hr 4 day contract, that is yours to keep for as long as your employed, so the same polite response to changing that to 5 days should be your response.

The whole revision process can last 6 months or even longer if there are problems so hold your ground, you dont haave to make any decisions yet.

The advice to make contact with your branch and disability champions is a good one.

Best of Luck mate

duties can be created/adjusted if they want to, and is easy to do so,
some folk at ours got leap frogged in seniority to suit their contracted hours (agreed by the manager/rep) when the revision took place at ours,
i asked our rep how come a few folk got a pick of the duties even though I'd been there several years more, his answer was those had been designated to them beforehand and never were going to be included in the re-pick? and yes, our onion rep said that!

edit... i may stand corrected on this, but you still travel to "your" office at your start time and they must get you to another office and get you back at your finish time, been a few few years since i got shipped out, but that was the procedure then
