AA Drive Tech training

I'm due to start work for the RM in a few weeks time, a few days before my induction course I will be undertaking an On Road Driver assessment.

The blurb I received via email states the following - Vehicle audit – please ensure that your vehicle is legal and roadworthy as the assessment will be conducted in your vehicle............. is this because the blurb has simply been copied from the training suppliers (the AA), and what they really mean is that the assessment will be carried out in a RM vehicle, or am I expected to undertake the assessment in my private car ?

If it is to be done in my private car, the obvious problem will be that my private car is not insured for business use .

They are done in a RM van. Normally the biggest mankiest old van the office has.

Someones just copied the blurb, I had mine a few weeks ago in one of the LDV vans/sheds.

Supposed to be 3.5 hrs long, Supposed to do all the manouvers etc etc, I did 90 mins and no manouvers as it was super super icy and van was all over the shop still got a 'low risk' at the end.

We live in a rural area, and only run one car. The start and finish times with my new job won't dovetail with her start and finish times, so it looks like one of us (guess who) will be getting the bus to work from now on.

As it's a fiver bus fare for an 8 mile round trip I think its going to be cheaper to pick up an old banger when I've completed a month or 2 of working for the RM............ or divorce the old banger I'm married to

They normally do it in the largest van available at that office, so that you can operate all vehicles used there, as you can only get approved/passed for the class of vehicle you tested in or smaller.[ eg if you are tested in a Corsa van, you could not use a Transit/ Sherpa.]

That makes sense.

I was hoping it would be in a Corsa van, but I now expect it to be a Transit/Sherpa.

I doubt you will get any choice but in case you do choose a Transit over a LDV. They are far better to drive.

I did the course yesterday and ended up driving a transit.

I didn't exactly cover myself in glory as I was assessed overall as medium risk (there were a few low risk marks though). But as I've never driven had a driving job before, and have only driven a van a couple of times in my life (the last time was about 8 years ago when I hired a van for a day) I suppose it could have been far worse.
