Your job is about as secure as most in the UK so i wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.
There could be large scale job losses to come if and when we are sold off but i think we are at least 18 months away from that scenario...the job losses that is,not the privatisation.
That could be much sooner. :cuppa

It depends on what business model any potential owner(s) may decide to use in the future.
It could be a reduced delivery service,it could be outsourcing sections of the business like network or even processing,it could be the Dutch part-time model,it could be all of the above or none.
The truth is no-one knows so it's not really worth worrying about too much...at the moment.

There is no such thing as Job security for the working class in Britain today.
The wealthy don't like it, makes for a less 'flexible' workforce, and we all know exactly what they mean by 'flexible' don't we?

OPGs at the sharp end 'should' be the last to be affected by privatisation .. it's those in managerial functions that do not directly 'add value' that I expect to find themselves at threat first. The fact that in the CMA they have a union that is unable to provide much help or support makes them even more vulnerable.

First and foremost there is a national agreement on job security which will be launched in the new year which may help you. All fixed term contracts with 2 years service will be reviewed with the aim of making them permanent. if you have already had a revison then you will be normally be made permanent unless like the North East you have an agreed mail centre closure plan which ensure those effected are first looked after.

I cover two regions and both regions are meeting us to ensure that the agreement is introduced and for offices who have had their revisons there should be no fixed term contracts employed in that office in the future only permanent contracts unless agreed at Divisonal level otherwise ie a mail centre closure.

In addition all part time contract staff hours will be reviewed with the aim of if a part timer on a contact is regularly working 30 hours per week then they should get a 30 hour contract. However the hours must be against their duty ie their own rather than an additional hours against someone who is sick. PSP does not identify if you are continually working over your hours to complete your duty or volunteering for additonal overtime against sick leave or pressure.

if your office still has yet to have a revison there is still a chance you could be made permanent before a revison. However it will depend on the phase 2 output against staffing levels. So if as in some offices there are 8 vacancies and 4 FTCs and the savings for this office on phase 2 output before Negotations and miras etc is say 4 duties then allftcs could be made up now. it is a rough example but that is the level of detail weare going through to try and get as many FTCs made permanent and part timers on increased hours contract.

In terms of what happens if we are sold , well the talks I understand with the government have said all existing agreements At the time of the sell will stay in place until renegotiated. Of course people may think any new owner will rip up all agreements but they are purely guessing.

I hope that you get a permanent contract under the national agreement which is being rolled out early in the new year. others may mock but I assume they all have a permanent contract and would rather look at all things in a doom and gloom way.

Good Luck !

And this "new national agreement" will it be rolled out before the members see it or after - with a little more of the "we know best" attitude that is current at the moment - and we all know where that has led us. Just what else is involved in this new agreement, anything we should be concerned about do you think?

Dvbuk we had policy forum on this agreement where every branch in the uk had a chance to amend and vote and hold meeting on.

It is a good national agreement.

Ah well that'll explain why the ordinary members don't know anything about it but it doesn't explain why the agreement hasn't been published by the CWU. It's not by coincidence dingo the members of most branches haven't a clue what's going on because they are disenfranchised.

I can't see any potential buyer agreeing to be tied to an obligation made with the previous owner.
It would have to be written into the contract of sale to have any real meaning and that would put off potential buyers, especially a hugely expensive agreement like MTSF.
Even with an IPO any financial obligations Royal Mail has will reflect in the share price.
I'm not even sure if what the Government "says" would have any legal validity after a sale without amendments to the Postal Services Act itself.
