Sorting standards @ Xmas

Lino stacked a specified pile of trays behind about 10 posties today and said you have until the end of ips to get them done

Roughly 1h 15m and 7 trays of letters each

Lino then came down on one chap who did 5 which I thought was a good standard considering that it's Xmas cards and harder to read etc

Member feels mighty pissed off and picked on.

What do we do about it?

I tried to explain that asking that much of people is wrong and told Lino they are opening can of worms.

How can you possibly compare 1 set of boxes against another set. Some may be halfful, some may have flats in them. Absolute nonsense. Put in a disagreement.

Lino claimed all had " roughly same amount in"

I didn't see it and only knew when individual approached me.

I then had a chat with Lino who said they were trying to " up the standard "

I thought it was 1200 items an hour?

But at xmas surely this is more like 900 with the dodgy writing as opposed to printed mail.

227 items per tray...?

you only need to do the 1 min test there is no set work standards for x amount of trays , unless he can show you the agreement

There also tend to be a lot more xmas cards in a tray than you would typically with manual letters the rest of the year. A couple of years ago when I was on nights at xmas I counted the number in each tray (I was really really bored) and it was about 450 on average with some having as much as 600 in.

There is no Individual Performance Standard - apart from the 1 minute test.
They do however have "resourcing standards" - here's the traffic, here's the mix - this is how long it "should" take.
But if it takes longer - it takes longer.
What should then follow is an analysis of why it took longer.
Was the traffic wildly out? Were there more letters than flats? Were there insufficient porters to ensure the boxes were kept clear?
That sort of thing.

Unfortunately the fallback position is just - you are all too slow.

Get them 10 posties to each stick in a grievance against that manager. This time of year the quality of the addresses is a lot poorer, with many xmas cards missing the postcodes or having wrong postcodes. One road locally is split between 3 DOs so if the person sending the item has missed off the postcode and the house number it has a 1 in 3 chance of even making it to the correct DO (yes I know in practice the first DO to get the item would most likely kill it off).
