mon to friday delivery

I've heard recently that royal mail are looking to cancel delivery on a Saturday and just do Monday to Friday. Obviously as its not privately owned yet they have a responsibility to deliver on Saturdays but once it gets bought out privately the first thing they are going to do is look to do Mon to Fri delivery. This obviously resulting in loss of jobs. I'm a tad curious about this as I've only been there about 4 and half years years so I'm quite low down the seniority pecking order, which is what's concerning me.

Is this likely to happen and when?

Anyone have any other info on this?

if privatised the new owners would still be responsible for maintaining the uso, so unless you have heard that the government is looking to change the uso (which hasnt been announced anywhere) the you can start to worry, i think you would find that there would be a large number of voluntary retirements anyway so compulsory would probably not be a big part of it, i know at least 10% of my office would go if there was a package offered

I hope there will be option to do Monday to Thursday then Tuesday to Friday in rotation. This would make me happy.

I think I have posted this before but when I was in London a few years ago at a big knobs meeting. It was proposed to do firms mon-fri and residential tue-sat. But as everyone always says why would we support an arrangement that makes a sixth of the members obsolete overnight?

A recent Ofcom study cited Saturdays as the preferred day to be dropped by both business and residential customers. Businesses wanted continuity from Monday to Friday.

I thought the USO with delivery 6 days a week was protected for 10 years post privatisation. Might have read that on here but unsure!

makes me so mad when I see posties on here willing to sacrifice one sixth of our workforce for a Saturday off

this is going to be blunt

if you don't want to work Saturdays then get your stuff together go get another job see ya later

you knew it Saturdays were a working day when you joined

If you have decided that you no longer want this then make the choice and go

don't sacrifice 1 in 6 of your workmates for your own selfish needs, think about what it would really mean

as someone else said if we go to a 5 day delivery then from a money point of view Tuesdays would be the logical choice - would you be as happy throwing your workmates on the dole if it turned out you still have to work Saturdays???? If it turned out the 5 days did not include Tuesdays???

what sort of person would watch someone they work next to be told their job has gone just so they could lie in bed on a weekend

If you want Saturdays off make the sacrifice yourself and get another job rather than expecting 1/6 of your workmates to do it for you

If Royal Mail want a 5 day service after privatisation they'll get it.
They are already putting the feelers out to test public and business reaction under their future scenarios banner.
They will put the case to Ofcom that in order to protect the overall financial viability of the USO they need to reduce the service,Ofcom will put the case to Government and then after a few meaningless debates and some empty promises Bob's your uncle,job done.

In my honest opinion it's a stick on to happen and it will be Mon-Fri because that would stop the members and therefore the Union from making too much fuss.
The worry for me apart from the immediate job cuts is that,for some areas at least...it won't stop at 5 days.
