If you have a/l booked in December and your DOM says he cant give it to you only let you have it as unpaid leave -- what is the deal with this?? Whats the unions opinion on the matter?

Just an aside when is the holiday booked for, and does your unit have a leave block at some point over Christmas. Also was the leave booked before joining Royal Mail. Answers to these, and many questions, will help people when giving advice.

it was the monday before x mas and thursday after boxing day, book by a previous manager and yes no one is supposed to be off there is a block on a/l at that time, not booked before joining.

Depending on when you joined will relay on the type of contact you would have signed. Most contacts over 15 years ago would have written in them that you would be expected to work extra hours at Christmas. If you joined over 20 years ago there was a complusory overtime directive.

Most leave blocks close the Christmas period up to Christmas Day. Some offices this means a 4 week leave closure and for others a 2 week leave closure.

In some offices this year management forgot to block off Christmas Eve and some indivduals have signed for this day. Clearly it depends how wide spread this was in your office and depends on how many you have off on Christmas Eve . Some offices have honoured this day where people have evidence that they have booked to go away and some indivduals have decided to take New Year's Eve off rather than Christmas Eve.

Clearly Royal Mail have a obligation to make a delivery on Christmas Eve but if they have mistakenly allocated you a days leave for Christmas Eve then your entilted to discuss this with your manager and rep.

After Boxing Day if you are allocated leave there should be no issue as this period is part of a normal leave spread.
