Union contributions tax relief?
Just a quick question regarding our union contributions, can we claim a tax relief on them or are we already getting it? i found out today that Unison allows for certain members to claim tax relief for their payments are we entitled with the CWU? http://www.unison.org.uk/healthcare/taxrelief.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (if not why not?
)
Many Thanks :)

Also found this it may (or may not be) regarding the tax relief.

If we're not how can Unison get tax relief and the CWU dosen't?

be nice if I'm right in this respect and we should be getting this tax relief (unless we are already) we could all be inline for a moderate rebate.When you can get tax relief for professional fees and subscriptions
It may be that in order to do your job you need to have your name included on a professional register or to have a special licence. Or it could be that it's very helpful to belong to an organisation whose activities are necessary to your work.

if you read the whole part of that rather than the first couple of linesJynxx wrote:Also found this it may (or may not be) regarding the tax relief.

Either way you'll pay registration fees or membership subscriptions - usually every year. You may be able to deduct the cost of these from your taxable income and reduce the amount of tax you pay.
You may get tax relief on professional fees and subscriptions if:
you have registered, obtained a licence or become a member of the organisation in question because it's necessary to your work
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has approved the organisation you're a member of
Check the list of HMRC approved organisations
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/list3.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
you would find out that the CWU is not on the list so we are not entitled to a refund unfortunately

Thank you for the response, it does raise the question however why isn't the cwu recognised? (when unison is) Is there an email address for any high up cwu reps I can raise the issue with?

Re: Union contributions tax relief?
Because some of their members are also members of other professional bodiesJynxx wrote:Thank you for the response, it does raise the question however why isn't the cwu recognised? (when unison is) Is there an email address for any high up cwu reps I can raise the issue with?

The CWU doesn't have members which are recognised by other professional bodies.*Tax relief is due to members of Unison Health Care Sector within the sectors of Nursing,
Ambulance, Voluntary, Professional & Technical A, Professional & Technical B, Senior and
General Managers.
