Extra 10 minute Break for being Ex PHG

Moving to Nottingham Mail Centre as Derby is shutting soon have heard from the staff that have gone there already that the Ex PHG's get extra 10 minutes break, several of use OPG's are thinking of putting in a grievance about this unfair practice, they are getting an xtra £20 per week and full shift allowance pensionable talk about extracting the urine out of an ordinary postperson or what.

They do get an extra £20 per week from the way forward and they get an extra percentage on allowances. They do not get an extra break unless it's time bonus break.

They used to get a 10 minute break (every hour) from Video coding in the old days, which they regarded as a break and not just a break from staring at a video screen.

I do a PHG's job every time i work in boxcounter,but never knew they got an extra £20 a week..being a reserve/driver/delivery postie should i also be entitled to this £20 whenever i cover because i am doing everything a PHG does am i not??

Only if you were in receipt of it under grandfather rights. Or if you are the PIC when managers leave the site. (PIC Person In Charge) you then get a leadership allowance.

In my opinion we should get it when they are on site as well

Hey I don't get it I've never been worthy enough to be a phg with authority and attitude and I haven't time to put my feet up and as for horses - I used to be in the horse artillery for a time and that's the closest I ever got.

Our last real PHG retired about 10 years ago.
He was more like an RSM than a PHG.
If you forgot to hand in your card he was standing by your frame at 0501 waiting for an explanation.
If you lost something it was safer to go straight to the Dom and fess up....

The reference to an RSM took me back to a time more than 40 years ago when I had the misfortune to come across a particular RSM who took a dislike to me (perhaps I should qualify that maybe he had cause because I was a bit of a mischievous handful) - one night whilst returning to barracks in mid winter this guy had slipped and broken his leg whilst he was drunk, he was unconscious and I left him there hoping for the worst...................

hi can you explain why as a xphg with grandfather rights do they deduct my 20 pounds when i cover professional driving duties from my substitution, so instead of receivieing 63 its reduced to 43. surely we are entitled to that under the agreemnent as reserved rights.when i soke to shefield they said you lose it but as i understand it there are drivers who still receive the phg paynment.

It is quite simple , Royal Mail under the Way Forward. Postman's Pay at this point in in 1999 was £201.63 and a PHGs money was £229.93. As a result of Saturday premium ceasing , NDA going including on overtime , Ceasing Saturday double time , driving allowance , changes to shift allowance time , improved holiday pay, consolidation of UPAP and a number of pay changes.

Basic pay which for the first time was fully pensionable went to £238 for all staff but existing PHGs on a reserved rights basis kept their UPAP payment of £20 on top which became fully pensionable. In addition PHGs kept the difference between the ex PHG grade and Postman's. Grade for shift allowance and overtime rates plus all their night allowance was pensionable rather than half.

You have to realise that the PHGs hated the thought of a unigrade and the way forward was rejected the first time and was one of the most opposed agreements ever in Royal Mail. Members even took the union to court over the ballot and the campaign against it was organised and effective if controversial including John Keggie eating a s**t sandwich.

Is this the pay rise of the century you allude to on many occasions?

No the 26.28 increase was in 2003 under the pay and major change agreement ie the movement from 2 deliveries was all new money , some offices who were in receipt of ICS or PBS had to consolidate £5 of this bonus but they were in the small minority. Oh and the end of the 6 day week.
