i know d2ds are meant to be spread over 6 days now, but am i right somewhere in the agreement it states the postman can still judge his own workload?

Moving D2D into workload in a revision
• Door to Door will be planned on the basis of prepping and delivering 1/6th of the items each day of the week, Monday to Saturday.
• D2D should be the last items prepped to a frame after address mail unless there is available down time such as waiting for missorts or late arrivals.
• Whilst D2D workload will be planned on the basis of spreading it across six days a week delivery employees will have the ability to manage the delivery of the items themselves on the proviso that all items are delivered and the delivery specification is not compromised
• Whilst this may involve cold calling at some address points for which there are no other items it is the best approach overall as it is easy to understand, communicate and monitor
• D2D traffic volumes will now be entered into the Indoor Workload Tool (IWT) to calculate the workload associated with D2D.
• The standard procedure for collating and sorting D2D items varies as follows according to number of contracts:

1 or 2 Contracts
• Obtain D2D items for contract and place on bench
• Pick up handful and place one item in slot for each delivery point on that day's schedule
• Tidy away D2D
• Repeat for second contract
• Clear down D2D with ordinary mail from slots containing live mail

3 or more contracts
• Position one pile of D2D on bench for each contract
• Take item from top of each pile and place collated items in slot for each delivery point on that day's schedule
• Tidy away D2D
• Clear down D2D with ordinary mail from slots containing live mail

• A new updated call rate calculator has been issued which adjusts the call rate to take account of delivering 1/6th of D2D items each day.
• The frame should be clearly marked into 6ths (approx) so that both the regular OPG and any reserve duty can quickly identify the daily D2D requirement by road(s)
• Where delivery is performed in pairs (shared van delivery) the delivery loop or burst will constitute the most appropriate volume of delivery points to cover daily but the principle of 1/6th should be maintained.
• Dual prep roles should ensure that they prep D2D for both routes
• Clear down is as per normal process

But it doesnt mean you come in 30 mins early to chuck them all in, or come in saturday on your week off to chuck them in for the following week. Really dont get why people just dont take 1/6th a day. Its easy to manage it and if you get 5 or 6 lots its great as you do less ips, more prep and if not enough time you cut off. Simples.

I don't either if it's any consolation.
I like to get all mine done early is the usual excuse or i only like going to the doors i have mail for.
I think they just like to think up the most awkward and convoluted process for doing them just to make life harder for the rest day cover.
I've left all the odds and houses with brown doors and people with an S in their surnames.

Spot on. "oh the guy who normally covers my days off likes to do the top row unless it's after midweek when he likes to do the bottom row. I told you this last time you covered about 8 months ago"

70+ walks in our DO and I've got to navigate the vagaries of each one on top of contending with knackers unable to stick to the d2d plan.

So say your rest day is Saturday, and you do "your own thing" Monday and Tuesday, and then go sick. What happens to the D2D's on Wed/Thurs/Fri ?
No one knows what you've done already, especially the people covering the duty.
Much better and easier for everyone concerned to deliver a sixth a day and keep the daily list on the fitting.

~ one sixth each day, done by set columns each day, slight variances in totals due to variable amounts of double slots per column. Our frames are using 7 columns across, so the 7th column is split by boxes Mon-Thurs. Basic artist impression of frame on back of D2D control sheet, each day's duty holder signs off which bits they have prepped (and hopefully delivered regardless of whether the address had other mail).

The danger of straying much from the above means wildly different prep times, especially when there are more than ~2 D2D items per household involved, which is sadly more often than not these days.

Who wrote these rules. I would guess a manager in planning dept. with the posssible help of a union rep. neither of which has probably done the job for over 10 years. It takes me around 20 minuters, sometimes more, to put my 6 lots of D2D's into the frame each morning 'before' I put the addressed mail in. If I was to follow this rule I'd be there all day trying to squeeze those flimsy A4 leaflets in amongst my stuffed slots.

The first trial on automation of door to door started in Dorking delivery office this week. Door too Door has not grown as Royal Mail had hoped all be it revenue has as more door to door is being delivered and less compensation is being paid. Royal Mail are only interested at this point of automating those offices who regularly get 6 or more. A lot of offices are struggling to get 2 and a significant number are averaging 1 .
