Absolutely terrified. Starting on Monday

I have read the newbies thread and read all the tips I can on other threads as well and to be honest I am absolutely terrified.

I start on Monday (induction) and on Tuesday in mail centre for delivery. I am doing 4 month contract with 23.5 hours a week with rotating day off. I think I'm scared that I'm starting at the worst time of the year. I'm terrified about the managers bullying me to do more hours when I don't want to. I have my family to look after and get to school and pick up.

I'm scared that I won't have much training and be put on the crappest round and struggle to complete.

I want the job but having major wobbles. I have already said. I won't get in till 9.55 (start 10am) as if I started going down the route of early starts they will expect it all the time.

Welcome to hell. Joke. You'll be alright don't worry. It ain't that bad. Just a busy time of year. You might have nice managers. My managers are nice, sometimes try it on. I do my best for them, I think they respect that. Being new you should be with someone for a few days so the first few days should be easy while you get to know the ropes.

Try not to worry,it's not going to change anything by worrying,you shouldn't be taking packets now and for the next few weeks,if your office is on park and loop you will be put with a driver who will help you and also you should have a mentor to help you till you find your feet,you will soon learn who you can ask for advice and also the oxygen thieves to avoid,above all don't stress everybody here has been though it and most came out smiling (the others were carted off lol) good luck.

Go and try it, don't worry about things, some people are able to do this job and some are not, all you can do is give it a try and if it doesn't work out for you then so be it.

you shouldn't be taking packets now and for the next few weeks.

why do you say that? of course she will be taking packets. Are you confusing packets with parcels?
Divadee, all I have to say is that what you see in the next month will probably be the worst of the delivery side of the job. Once you get through that you'll be ok.

Don't worry. Enjoy it, you will ache a bit for the first few days..... and that's about it. If you need to lose a few pounds, this will do it for you. Nearly everyone about you will be helpful and you will make loads of new mates. Most managers are pretty decent but possibly not that bright.

I joined this time last year and love it. I am on a 25 hr contract but in reality do 40-50 hrs a week and still get the kids from school most days.

I'm in the same boat about dropping off my kids and picking them up from school.

You have to tell them from the get go that you have to pick your kids up from school. No exceptions. And don't allow them to bully you into working overtime.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I'm hoping if I can get through December then I will be able to cope with the rest of the year (that's the theory anyway lol)

I'm sure I will have wobbles and make mistakes. But I will stand up for myself and I did tell them at the interview I would not go over my time and not get paid. And they still gave me the job! They must be desperate lol.

And the 27th and 28th! As it had taken so long to hear back from them (i applied in august!) we booked to go to relatives for Xmas so when they called and asked about any holiday booked I had to tell them about that. They didn't have any problems with it so a nice 4 day break to help what will be very weary legs.

all new starters are expected to do loads of overtime extra half of walks. else they fear they wont get their contract renewed Prepare yourself for extra work say 40 hrs a week

I dont mind doing 40 hrs on a 24 hr contract so long as im paid for it, If they expect it for free theres gonna be some falling out
