FIRST CHRISTMAS POSTAL STRIKE DATE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has now given Royal Mail official notice of the first in a series of postal strikes in the run up to Christmas.

At a further meeting today Royal Mail refused to change their position and this resulted in a final breakdown of local talks.

Postal workers at the depot in Mead Street will take strike action from 00:01 on Monday 10 December 2012 until 23:59 on the same day. There will therefore be no deliveries on Monday 10 December 2012.

Bristol CWU area official David Wilshire said “Management still fail to grasp the extent of the problem they have caused and continue to bury their heads in the sand”.

David went on to say “We will be meeting our members at the depot on Tuesday morning to prepare for the strike”.

Last week postal workers at the Mead Street depot returned an 81% “Yes” vote in favour of strike action.

It's a strange one.
You would have thought that the message coming from Royal Mail HQ at this time of year would be to settle this ASAP or at least commit Bristol to removing the strike threat in return for protracted talks and false promises but it would seem that they are quite happy for local management to take a hard line over this...
Not sure exactly what Bristol are asking for but whatever it is management have been told from the top not to give them it.

royal mail will see it as saving wages, the blokes with have a heavier work load, it may go national.

I'm guessing Bristol are asking the same as every failing office, Why? Suddenly 2 bike duties taking 3 to 3 and a half hours now put in a van and alongside taking ALL your own packets, specials and tracked, and the little extra 150 calls that the planners say georoute says you can take, it now takes anywhere up to 10,11 even 12 hours. We go like f**k to get round but still cant complete yet we are told georoute says we can. Until RM realise georoute is flawed and not accurate then im guessing next year many other offices will follow Bristol. I know we are all sick to the back teeth of it all and its only a matter of time when it explodes.

I honestly believe that Moya and Co are engineering a National Strike. Could be to fire everyone and take them back on with inferior terms or could be to de franchise the CWU in the workplace. Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

its all just madness it must be costing the company much more money than the old system i cant work it out is it a plan to run the company into the ground or what, so no one gets the pension plans.

I have a different theory although that's all it is.
I think as part of the settlement the Bristol members want an investigation into the behaviour of management at the site.
I think this terrifies RM HQ because it may just open the floodgates and reveal Bristol to be the tip of a very grubby iceberg and show the last two years of Moya's reign,the supposed turnaround of the company and the modernisation project to be built on nothing more than incompetence,bullying and harassment.
Doesn't do much for your prospects of selling the company that.

You may well be right ft but by the same token a strike hardly shouts "BUY ME" and certainly doesn't point to a management in control. I rather think of the management at that level to be headless chickens there is a plan but nobody seems to want to follow it - the plan is flawed obviously and there is no one in control. I have never understood the stance the CWU has taken in backing it.

The CWU was disenfranchised about 2 years ago.
What is happening in Bristol, would happen anywhere where there are pig-headed management, too stupid, too thick, and downright nasty, to ever give hardworking people an even break.
It's a desperate state postal workers find themselves in, much of it down to a union too much in the pocket of Royal Mail it has to be said, and if I were a Bristolian postman, I would be wary of losing any money just because the union fancies a bit of grandstanding before the latest hike in union dues.
