I'm starting next week as a 'Postie with driving' - 24 hrs.

What tips and advice do you have for me guys & girls?


Off subject, Do you guys on 24 hour contracts claim Working tax credits? As a single dude I have to average 30 hrs a week to be eligable, Is it likly ill average 30 or more?

the money you make on 24 hours will far outweigh the normal persons 24 hours ( on close to minimum wage ) so doing 30 will be even more so, you can apply for tax credits but I very much doubt you will get anything at all as you will be well above the limit.

Tips. not as many as I used to get a few years ago lol
but seriously, just do the job to the best of your ability, you have joined at the worse possible time and if you can see through to mid January then you will be able to handle it all year round.

Working tax credits is based on your last tax years earnings, I didnt earn much 04/11-04/12 so im eligable so long as I average 30 hrs a week, According to hmrc averaging can mean you do 20 hours 1 week, 40 the next. Is it likly ill do near 40 hours some weeks? (Not that ill mind)

I joined last year at exactly the same time mate. It's a nightmare this time of year, I did find it really hard the first few weeks at the busiest time. Get through that, January is nice and easy (mail-wise, not weather-wise!), let that be your motivation!

Cheers guys, I expect it to be a bit mental when I start next week due to the time of year.

Do you guys use under clothing thermals? It's a bit fresh out there!

Tip: Make sure on your first day, bearing in mind the weather, that you ask your manager to supply you with a couple of pairs of royal mail long johns. It's cold outside!! Oh, and some RM underpants (the ones with the queen on the front).

Seems stupid, but don't wear any clothes you actually like. I wore a half-decent pair of jeans for my first few days as it took them a bit to supply me with a uniform. It absolutely pissed it down and the jeans got ruined pretty much = 40 quid down straight away.

Don't wear too many clothes. Barely got above freezing here this week and for the most of the round I was "moist" underneath (the clothes that is)

layer up rather than a huge thick jumper or coat, it does get warmer as the day goes on. atm I'm leaving the office ready for an Arctic expedition, by 11ish the coat and gloves are off, 12ish the fleece and beaine and I'm finishing off in just a shirt
