mails down, lets look at it logically

Please people, no defamatory comments as i feel this thread is important

Everyday Royal Mail is hell bent on ramming down our throats that mail volumes are down and we need to cut costs. They should be politicians in the way they speak. Might i suggest people google neuro linguistic programming in the way information is portrayed.

Back on topic now, lets look at the facts

1/ Letter volumes are down, blame email, social networking etc
2/ Competition from down stream access has cut our revenue.
3/ Staffing levels continue to fall in line with falls in letter volumes count

Well royal mail have known this for years so why with the revisions have they incorporated into delivery offices/mail centres CCS MACHINES.

These CSS machines were second generation anyway, other postal operators have cast these off as not fit for purpose, so why with letter volumes falling, and continue to fall, why spend all that money on these machines.

The normal mech macines would have still done the job except the mail being sequenced. Even sequenced mail does not justify the cost of the CSS machines within efficiency targets.
With the growth of parcels and packets, why has Royal Mail spent a fortune on things like the bipper vans and introduced job share as well. The vans are to small and not fit for purpose

So with letter volumes down, and continue to fall, they spend a fortune on outdated sequence machines

with packet volumes rising they introduce job share with vans that can only accomodate one delivery

and the loss in revenue on letter post can be offset on the amount of staff leaving the business

Sequencing the mail was the only way that Royal Mail could reduce indoor time to allow scope to increase outdoor time and therefore reduce the number of deliveries.
The one off cost of the CSS machines and the upgrades to LSM's were irrelevant and didn't have to be justified,the loan was provided to modernise...end of story.
The ongoing savings are the only important factor,those have not be realised mainly because of management and planning failings.
If i was getting shot of anything that was obsolete and not fit for purpose it wouldn't be the machines....

Nobody is conning anybody. I would agree mail volumes have decreased but at the rate the mail has dropped isnt huge. DSA is mainly to blame...its our competitors who are taking jobs away from royal mail and the mail centres are badly affected by it all.

Park and loop looks great on paper but if you can't get the planning right and the right balance of people on the shift then of course trouble is only round the corner, which has happened in so many offices. Yes there will be teething problems within any revision but after 2 years and still nothing is resolved it becomes a bit of a joke. For once i wish royal mail would get it right with EVERYTHING, but the sad truth is theres too many chiefs and not enough indians running this business.

The bipper vans are slightly too small but it was probably the best vans on the market at the time. The driving position of the combo is not as superior as of the bipper, plus you have parking sensors which help a great deal.

Sadly mail volumes will decrease over the next decade but at the same time packet volumes are taking its place...so they balance out in the end. Royal mails problem with the ever increasing packets volumes is its not as cost effective as it is with letters. Its takes more time to process packets than it does with letters. I heard though that packets will be getting sorted out by machines soon....how soon is anybodys guess

the compatition a struggling mre than ever because royal mail are getting more and more of the contracts back so dont be foold by them saying mails down . look at your old working week monday loads of mail tuseday no mail wednesday quite a bit of mail thursday friday hammerd say early finish only 1st and 2nd class mail today monday quite a lot tuseday not much wednesday hammerd thursday friday saturday hammerd.so mail delivered over your working hours has incressed it just the way the fillter the mail through to make it look like its less

68 large parcels today and 6 sacks of smaller parcels , 25 tracked items on our P/L round .
Van was crammed to the top and these vans are TOO small, showed the DOM who said that next week the large parcels were going to be done by someone on light duties.
My driver was getting majorly pissed off as every time he opened the van door the parcels and bags kept falling out
Counted our 739 cards today and between us wrote out 78 docket left cards .
Brought back 3 sacks of docketted mail and 18 loose parcels.
We are only getting rid of about half of parcels

It's not emails to blame for letter volumes going down, the vast majority of emails are things that wouldn't be sent in the post, and a lot of others are generated by internet sales.
I would have thought that the telephone was the main reason for decline, I might be wrong.

Blipper vans are only slighty too small,get a grip our combi is overflowing and as been said already when you open the doors everything spills out a la keystone cops,and also concerning the blipper vans they are not being run enough to clean the particle filters out and are breaking down,so they are not fit for purpose and as for the driving position IMHO the transit connect is the most comfortable and practical vehicle to work from.

So that's why Royal Mail only uses the word 'Packet' not 'Parcel' on the new P739, because the 'Standard Parcel' category will soon be gone to PF.
Keep hearing mail volumes dropping, parcels gone and we'll only have Packets.
