Criminal inquiry into Woking mail thefts

A criminal investigation has been launched into thefts of post in Surrey affecting about 75 victims.

Surrey Police said the thefts had been predominantly in the Mount Hermon area of Woking, but mail had also been stolen in Maybury.

"These thefts have caused huge concern for the local community," said Sgt Nolan Heather. "The issue has been made a force priority."

Royal Mail has said it could not comment because of the investigation.

Officers met residents at St Dunstan's Church on Thursday to update them on the inquiry.

In August, police emailed residents in Woking in August warning that post, including bank cards, had been stolen.
Money stolen

There were reports of men in high-visibility jackets going through mail bags and reaching into letter boxes under the guise of delivering leaflets.

In May, Royal Mail launched an investigation into postal theft when fake bank accounts were set up and large sums of money stolen.

"Those living in the affected areas should notice a visible policing presence in these areas during the times when we know post has been being stolen," said Mr Heather.

"In the meantime, I would urge members of the public to be vigilant and take steps such as shredding confidential paperwork, using security lighting and making sure not to leave cards and other post hanging out of the letterbox when posting items through other people's doors."
