cutting off!!!

Post by osgoody1970 »

with the rise of people cutting off, and managers telling posties you cannot come back early if you do, walks rising to nearly 5 hours after revisions, the union has to engage management as to the best practice for cutting off, no day stays the same and packets rising, i find it increasingly difficult to gauge what i can take out or leave in without going over, or coming back 5 mins early and getting warned about wilful delay, that lord was indeed right......royal mail has not got the managers, to bring about change!!!!

They cant have it both ways.
They DOM WILL ask YOU where will you get to by finishing time but how do you know??
But when you tell the DOM that you will take it all out and bring back whats left they dont want you to do it.
When you tell the DOM that the runners/early starters cant start their docket out till their allocated finish time they dont want to know.
This is because the runners / early starters finish early and want to take the docket out early .
Plus the DOM's want everything sorted so they can go home early

I've said it before but i don't think the "cutting off" or overrunning deliveries procedure is now fit for purpose.
It does not relate to shared van deliveries nor the exponential growth in attendance call items and it was designed with the odd occasion in mind not an everyday occurrence where the law of averages says that at some point the OPG will get it wrong.

Another thing that must be addressed by the National Officers is this nonsense that having to bring mail back because you have no more time to deliver it or happen to finish 10-15 minutes early because you got lucky with the packets is anywhere near the description of Wilful or even Unexcused Delay.

If you have done all you can to inform management of the situation and they leave you no option but to bring the mail back it's their issue not the OPG's and if you do come back to the office a bit early,as long as it's not happening everyday, big deal,we're not psychic and there is always something to do around an office anyway.

It is pure and simply a bullying tactic designed to make you work over your time, just to be safe....it's pathetic.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

does any one work in a DO where most town deliveries the duty holders come in early and they go out twice. Then when a person does not come in early they are made to look slow and are made to feel that they are not up to the job by the early starters and the manager.

The needless introduction of later starts means cutting off is a necessity for some whereas they would have completed on o/t before.
And the model week scenario means failing to complete within your contracted hours is what is supposed to happen.
The system is designed to fail yet the fallback position of all managers appears to be - it is a performance issue.

What is amazing is that if you do overtime in order to complete, not a word is said that you are slow. However if you want to cut off, suddenly you have become slow and incapable of doing the job. Can anyone tell me what the difference is?

By cutting off you are showing a "deep lack of respect of the managers authority".

we are expected to tell our manager if we're going over,as though we require his blessing. I told our previous manager he needs to assume that i will finish on my time everyday and any time he wants me to go over he needs to come and ask me.i think we're rapidly approaching a situation where no one will work past their time, can't wait.

The problem is alot of people like the ot. In fact i would say majority of rounds go over. The dirty dozen who cut off out of an office of say 100 get exposed to managers. Why do do we do docket?money. Im guilty of it and so are many on this site. We are all for ourselves these days and rm play on this. After all the union guys look after themselves so who gives a toss . Unless there is a strike that i would suport i will do what suits me and many think the same so nothing will change. Cutt off and get the stick or work to the witching hour. These are the choices?

That isn't a problem.
"flexing up" is part of the system.

The problems are:
1. getting paid the correct amount of o/t without "discussions". (Performance/banking hours etc)
2. being allowed to NOT do the o/t if it isn't wanted.

:Applause Well said Clash. I think we're all aware that not all DOs are the same. This Forum certainly highlights that. It's easy to believe that we all have the same problems, especially if you've only worked in one DO all your career.

One thing I'm sure of is...things can always get worse! A nearby office has a culture of working unpaid overtime! A small DO with no local CWU Rep...it's happy days for the DOM (and his bonus). A few of the "Old Full-Time Mafia", who are happy with their easy/unbalanced duties, and it's left to a few unhappy posties, who have the hard/unbalanced duties to basically piss in the wind. You don't have much of a chance when you're not only trying to fight the DOM but also your colleagues! :arrrghhh

Overtime papers over the cracks. Cutting off means management have to manage , it's so much easier to bully and harrass to avoid such situations.
