Just a general question. I have been a postie for 15 years and although there are bad times i enjoy the job .The majority of my custumers respect the work we do.

having done business deliveries for the past 6 years or so, and being talked down to / ignored by receptionists and shop workers on a daily basis, this has probably added to my feeling of 'couldn't care less' towards the job.

Same here,a certain section of the public respect what we do,another section don't give a toss and a third section think we are a shower of lazy thieves.
The first section is reducing and the other two are increasing and privatisation with everything that brings will only make it worse.

Was proud to be a postie at one time and enjoyed the job but the last few years seen the job go down the pan and with the size of deliveries now i am knackered and hate the job

Yeah i hate the job now, these days the harder you work the more they put on you. And incompetent managers who shouldn't be managers bully and harass quiet staff.

I'd rather work in MacDonalds.

Hopefully soon i'll leave.....i just can't wait.

At the moment id still say its a good job with decent terms and conditions. People who moan are generally the ones who remember "the good old days" I remember them too - but even then we moaned! The phrase "never had it so" good springs to mind. There is no doubt that, at least on delivery. the job is harder. Not good as you get older and you remember your round used to take you 2 hours, and now it can take double that! I still like the job, but wonder where we will be after privatisation. We are well worth what we are paid, just for the integrity we need, and physical demands we face. Certainly if our Ts + Cs are reduced, i for one would reluctantly think about calling it a day. Dont know what else i would do, but my aching feet and back would probably thank me

The main problem is people rushing, people not being replaced, people cutting corners. Other than that its not a bad job.

I generally enjoy what I do and take pride in doing a good job, hate the indoor work as others have said, but love the outdoor bit.

You do get arsey knobheads who think you are just 'the postman' and that somehow they are above you cos they sit on their arse talking s**t all day in an office, but I just laugh at them. I'm happy being able to walk in and out of their miserable shithole office that they have to sit in all day.

The best people to deliver to are the 'older generation' who still respect the postman and who you can have a little chat with, that's the nice part of the job for me.

I must admit that having been a postie for twelve months this week - I am happier at work than I have been for 20 years. Mostly for the reasons outlined by many above, being outside etc. [Admittedly in my rural DO we have a good DOM and union rep.] Pay is a lot less than I have earned in the past, but who cares? It's enough and I am happy.

Biggest downside is the dinosaur tendency who moan incessantly about how great it was ten/ twenty years ago etc. Go and spend a few months outside RM in a non-union business and they will realise just how soft and protected it is here.

I agree it sucks indoors! I never knew how good it could be to work on my own, with no one else slowing me up or distracting me from work, and no manages or supervisors constantly on your back

Yes, enjoy most of it, respected by many I deliver to and a job satisfaction absent in a lengthy previous occupation.

I was a postman for 6 mnths i loved being out posting , didnt like some of the frames though and the sorting of thm , would have loved my own walk it would of then been my dream job

Yes i was often asked if i wanted a cup of tea , even once on my first day on a walk , was nice
