Quick newbie question.

Hi all,

Today was my first day at work as a postman.
I am contracted to do 5 4hour days.

Today I worked from 7.30-1.30 without stopping for a break.
I'm just wondering how many hours I will be paid for today.

I really enjoyed it today although it has been the wettest November day for 50years.

Well if you are contracted to work 5 hours, and you worked 6 and a half (including break). Then you need to book an hour and a half overtime.

It looks like he's contracted to work 5x4hr days,so there is a 20 min break in there for future reference.

Also it's not overtime payment wise,it's extra hrs up to 39/40 hrs.

You'll find that all posties are required to own a crystal ball.

You will be paid for 4 hours work as you failed to inform management that you were going to do overtime and exactly how much overtime. This is where the crystal ball comes in you see. Just a quick peek into the future and your sorted

But dont worry. The 2 hours or so that you worked for free go into the management bonus pot and they have a nice big party with the cash at the end of the year.

I went out with my coach Wednesday, Thursday and today but tomorrow in on my own. I'm a bit worried it is going to take me ages.

Don't worry, everyone takes ages first time on their own. You'll get quicker as you get used to it. Also, anything you need to know, this forum is a good place to find out. Don't believe your manager as far as you can throw him.

I went out with my coach Wed/Thu/Fri in my first week and on the Sat a casual tagged along to get it done - and on the Mon afterwards I had several customers complaining that the post hadn't been pushed through on the Sat - it wasn't me!! I cut off twice in the following week but have gradually got on top of it since, and have barely spoken to my coach since either. After couple of weeks I found a better way to do the wallk and that has helped me a lot.

a few tips for you ,
if you think your going to work over you must inform your manager prior to going out , that way you can either book overtime or juist work till your time and cut off ,
take your break either before you start delivering or half way round otherwise you won`t get one .
although you`ve had 3 days with a coach you won`t be as quick as someone who knows the round , maybe in a week or so you`ll be upto speed but with our busiest time of year fast approaching it`ll be hard to complete your round in the time given ,
don`t think just because your new they can walk all over you , you have same rights as someone who`s been there years ,

another tip: join the union, they are far from perfect but they will help you out if you get in any bother

Thank you all for the tips and advise.
Today went ok, luckily there wasn't many packets and only two recorded and one special, I changed the walk a little and it worked out better for me.
My coach drove along to see how I was getting on.
