Making sure we give customers the best possible experience is even more vital with the increase in parcels

Our enquiry offices are being given a makeover to improve the customer experience.

Everything from the customer’s first impression of the office, to the way we store and locate items, has been looked at.

By mid-November, 49 offices had changed and more than 200 staff had joined a one-day workshop to boost their customer service skills. More sites will follow after the Christmas rush.

Romford enquiry office is among the first to complete the improvements.

Vast improvement

Saba Arshed, customer reception manager, says: ‘It’s a vast improvement!

‘The customer-facing area has been completely redecorated, with new lighting, signage and a TV screen. We’ve put in a new queuing system with signs to direct customers with different queries to specific areas to cut waiting times.

‘We’ve also got prominent signs telling customers what documentation they need before they reach the counter so they don’t hold other customers up.’

The back office has also enjoyed a makeover. Craig Dawson, pictured middle, who works in the office, says: :funneh ‘Using World Class Mail techniques, we came up with a new shelving system and items are much easier and quicker to find.
‘When a P739 ‘Something for you’ card item comes back, we pop a coloured sticker on it and change the colour each week so we can see at a glance which week any item came in. :funneh We also write the house number and first few letters of the street name on the side of each item – it’s much quicker to find the right item.’

All five Romford staff did the customer service skills training.

‘It was excellent,’ says Craig. ‘It taught me things like how to deal with an angry customer – although with the improvements we’ve made in the office, hopefully we won’t have many of those!’

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Shelving? :d'oh!
I wondered where we were going wrong.
You have to hand it to WCM,only a multi-squillion pound project could come up with that.
We just throw them in a big pile and then hand whatever one is on the top to whoever comes in next.

They obviously haven't got another work at Romford to keep them busy so they give them coioured stickers to put on packets, wonderful sound just like my childhood days at primary school :dance

The two on the left will be sacked. Failure to wear identity badges. This must be immediate dismissal :d'oh! :d'oh!

Really? Feck me that is the quickest way ever of getting rid of packets - although if I could make a suggestion - just leave em outside - we wouldn't need callers offices at all, let the customer rummage through until they see something they fancy.

We had a makeover in our callers last November running right up to christmas eve, in the infinite wisdom of the planners we went from two serving hatches to one  and there is so little room you are struggling to get two people in the counter area. Although there is more shelving space there is still not enough and you're never going to have enough at christmas. I really think it is time to re-evaluate parcel collection and utilise post offices more without the customer having to pay a charge, I'm sure it would be used more if there was no charge.

shelving....nah who needs it..when we get busy or overloaded in the callers office....all surplus packets are left in...wait for it.....the canteen....which has no security camera, and even has a door a few feet away that leads on to a bustling city centre street... :d'oh! :d'oh! :d'oh! All with the blessing of our gaffers it would appear....(erm this was not my idea before anyone says anything....just staff members who have worked years in the callers office and have always done this sort of thing around xmas)

when the shelving was full all the p739 packets were put in troughs which was great until we came in on nights and had nothing to tip the packet bags into until we emptied the troughs and put the p739 packets on the floor !!! WCM my arse !!

I love this site. Have been away for a while. It's always a source of amusement.

We keep our locker space free of parcels by not attempting delivery !

You want a parcel on time ? Make sure is doesn't go via Royal Mail ;)
