Hi all, just a quick question regarding meal breaks?.
I'm currently on a 25 hours a week contract, am I allowed a meal break? , manager says that if I take a break of 20 mins I have to work 20 mins extra.
Any ideas?. :shock:

so does your manager let you finish 20 minutes early if you dont have a break.

Yes! You get 30 minutes break.

No your 20 minute break should be built into your duty so if you work 9am - 2pm you can take a break between tieing up and starting to deliver but still finish at 2pm. Anything after that is booked as overtime.

On a 25hr contract, if you're working 5 x 5hr days you are entitled to a 30 minute break .......... paid :cool

If you work 5 hours a day over 5 days a week then your meal break should be 30 minutes.

See Page 23 of The Way Forward Agreement 2000. Understand that some DOMS will happily lie about meal break entitlement if they think that you don't know any better.
What have I done to deserve this?

oh ok thanks all, its just the manager said its not in our contracts and I couldnt find any thing thats related to meal times, In my contract. thanks for the info

I can't actually put into words how angry this makes me tell him you now know you are entitled to a break and if he persists then tell him to put it in writing and try disiplining you and see what happens .you are due thirty mins most of the part time guys take twenty before they leave then ten half way round in the van.but you can take it when you like

Depends on your attendance pattern. Everyone gets 40 minutes in our DO. :nana

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

This is weird? Are you sure the two of you understood each other well. Even a casual is entitled to a break - this is standard practice - break is built into the hours you work - simple!

It does not even matter as long as you work your contractual hours (BTW, I don't know mine since revision 5 month now - my DOM is a bit of DIM: Union not helping either).

The only issue is that if you insist on taking a break at certain times - it can be hard in delivery or in some delivery offices...
